Well, it had to end sometime.
The University of Minnesota Duluth's 11-game unbeaten streak against the Miami University came to halt Saturday night as the host RedHawks held off the No. 14 Bulldogs 3-2 to gain a split in their two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series. The win was Miami's first over UMD since Feb. 21, 2015 and ended an 0-9-2 drought.
The Bulldogs (6-6-2 overall; 2-4-0-0 NCHC), who took the series opener 3-1 on Friday, jumped in front 1-0 midway through the first period when sophomore
Nick Wolff banged in a rebound just under the crossbar for his second goal of the year and second point of the series. Miami (5-6-1; 2-3-1) took its first lead of the weekend with a pair of even strength goals five minutes apart in the second period and then tacked on another score 2:52 into the third. With 1:23 to go in regulation and UMD sophomore netminder
Hunter Shepard pulled for an extra attacker, junior right winger
Parker Mackay took a pass from freshman defenseman
Mikey Anderson and buried a shot from the top of left faceoff circle.
Shepard, who now has made nine consecutive starts, had 21 saves in the losing effort while his counterpart, Miami's Ryan Larkin, stopped 27 shots.
UMD will take a brief break from NCHC warfare to host one-time WCHA rival Minnesota State University-Mankato on Nov. 25 in the front end of an extended home-and-home series, which will be completed on Jan. 23, 2018 in Mankato.
