Junior forward
Sean Burns tipped-in a missed layup with seconds remaining on the clock up lift the University of Minnesota Duluth over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis., Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs and Rangers exchanged leads multiple times down the stretch before UMD's last bucket sealed the victory.
UW-Parkside (0-5) grabbed their last lead on a pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go. Sophomore guard
Trevor Entwisle drove hard to the basket and had his contested layup bounce wide. Burns crashed hard and put back to miss. The Rangers rushed up the court and put up a last-second desperation floater that fell short.
"We played well for being on the road since Wednesday," said head coach
Matt Bowen. "We may have been sluggish but I was proud of the way our guys dug in down the stretch. Rohrscheib made some huge baskets when we were trading leads and Burns executed in the final minutes, made his free throws and, obviously, the big putback at the end of the game. We can't wait to continue the ride on the road again to start conference play."
Each team traded leads before UMD (2-2) stretched its biggest lead of the game to 24-15. UW-Parkside battled back to erase the advantage and regained the lead 45-44 for the first time since it led 7-4 early in the first half. The Rangers took the lead thanks to Bulldog' scoreless streak that stretched 4:06 until sophomore forward
Brandon Myer knocked down a pair of free throws that cut the lead to 47-46.
UMD did an excellence job at drawing contact and getting to the line early in the second half. They were in the double bonus with a little over eight minutes remaining. The Bulldogs were 19-of-21 at the charity stripe in the second half and 21 for 24 overall. Burns, sophomore guard
Logan Rohrscheib and sophomore
Brandon Myer each knocked down five free throws.
Rohrscheib led all scorers with 19 points and is the fourth different Bulldog to lead the team is scoring this season. Myer chipped 15 points and a team-high six boards while Burns ended with 11 and the all-important final two points of the game.
In six days, the Bulldogs return to action to start the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference grind. UMD will take on Bemidji State University on Friday, Dec. 1 at the BSU Gymnasium. Game time is schedule for 8:00 p.m.
