The Bulldogs may be in the midst of a season-long road stand, but Friday night, they looked right at home at Ridder Arena.
Twice the University of Minnesota Duluth trailed the sixth-ranked University of Minnesota by two goals in the third period, and twice the Bulldogs stormed back for the eventual 3-3 overtime tie. UMD then made its own on ice advantage and grabbed the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association shootout point with a 2-1 win in five rounds.
Minnesota scored the lone goal of the first 40 minutes 14:14 into the first period, and took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Grace Zumwinkle at 3:31 of the third period. Two minutes later, Katerina Mrázová put the Bulldogs on the board, but a power play goal by the Gophers at the 6:48 mark pushed the Minnesota lead back up to two goals at 3-1.
Enter Ashton Bell, who made sure her first appearance at Ridder Arena won't soon be forgotten. The freshman drew UMD within a single goal at 11:56, using a Gopher defenseman as a screen from the slot to beat Minnesota goaltender Sidney Peters high and glove side. Then at the 15:14 mark, Bell again struck, this time on the power play to knot the game at 3-3 and complete the Bulldogs comeback.
After a five-goal third period, neither team scored in the five minute overtime - the first time this season UMD has gone into extra time. Mrázová and Ryleigh Houston netted their shootout opportunities, lifting the Bulldogs for their second league point of the night.
While UMD was outshot 20-11 in the first two periods, the Bulldogs rallied in the third period to outshoot the Gophers 11-6. Overall, Minnesota held the 28-24 shot advantage. Bulldog net minder Jessica Convery made 25 saves for UMD, who is now 9-10-1 overall, and 5-7-1-1 in the WCHA.
UMD will wrap its final series up of 2017 tomorrow against the Gophers at 4:07 p.m.Â
