LEE, TOLKINEN ENJOY RECORD-BREAKING DAY AT YELLOWJACKET OPEN

The University of Minnesota Duluth exited the University of Wisconsin-Superior's  Lydia Thering Fieldhouse with 11 Yellowjacket Open individual titles Saturday and among those were a pair of record breakers in senior Brian Lee and sophomore Ryan Tolkinen.

Lee placed first in the weight throw with a toss of 61'-8.5", which bettered the previous UMD mark of 59' 09.00", which he set one year ago (Feb. 16) at the University of Minnesota's Snowshoe Open, and was also an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and currently ranks #1 in the conference and #14 in NCAA Division II.

Tolkinen prevailed in the 200-meter hurdles, clocking in at 25.00, and in the process broke Forrest Randall's school-record effort from Jan. 27, 2007 (25.14).

Joining Lee and Tolkinen in the winner's circle were senior Jason Lilja, who took first in the high jump (6'-8.75" -- both a facility record and NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark) as well as the long jump (22'-8.5"), junior Austin Carlson in both the 200-meter dash (23.10) and 400-meter dash (50.90), sophomore Andrew Lind in the 60-meter hurdles (9.13), junior Grant Pulver in the 3,000-meter run (9:00.03), junior Jess Petersen in the pole vault (13'-5.25"), freshman Wyatt Midtvedt in the 1,000-meter run (2:34.93) and sophomore Garret Schleis in the triple jump (43'-4.25"). The Bulldog 4 x 400-meter relay team, which consisted of juniors Nathan Comer and Connor Behm and seniors Boston Braack and Ben Hanson, captured top honors with a a time of 3:32.46.

A select number of Bulldogs paid a visit to The Showcase meet Friday on the University of St. Thomas campus with Lee (second in the weight throw - 58'-00.25'), Hanson (fifth in the 1,000-meter run -- 2:31.59) and Behm (sixth in the 200-meter dash - 23.27) posting the best UMD finishes.

Next Friday (Feb. 17), UMD will compete in the Snowshoe Open in Minneapolis -- its final tuneup for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
