PETERSON'S LATE GOAL LIFTS NO. 2 UMD PAST MIAMI IN NCHC SERIES OPENER

Avery Peterson has certainly made his goals count during his somewhat short time with the University of Minnesota Duluth hockey program.

The junior center scored on the power play with 1:21 to go in regulation to give the No. 2 Bulldogs a 4-3 National Collegiate Hockey Conference home victory over Miami University Thursday night.  For Peterson, who transferred to UMD from the University of Nebraska Omaha last winter and became eligible to play this past December, now has six goals, three of which have been game-winners, in 14 outings at as a Bulldog.

"I think special teams is something we as a team have struggled with lately and to get a couple tonight -- and the win -- is big," said Peterson. "Come playoff time, your special teams is usually what wins you games.

UMD (20-5-6 overall and 14-4-3-3 in the NCHC), which never trailed the entire night, took a 1-0 lead 13:00 into the first period on sophomore center Adam Johnson's odd-angle shot from the extended goal line and made it 2-0 early in the second period when senior center Dominic Toninato one-timed a feed from junior right winger Karson Kuhlman. Miami (9-16-6; 5-12-4 NCHC) struck twice in a span of 4:38 midway through the second period to draw even at 2-2 before UMD's Neal Pionk (a power play blast from the top of the left face off circle) and Miami's Carson Meyer exchanged third-period goals.

Bulldog rookie netminder Hunter Miska, making his 25th straight start, finished with 28 saves (including 16 in the second period when UMD was outshot 18-10) while improving to 19-4-4. Ryan Larkin made 26 stop for the RedHawks, who lost for the sixth time in a row at AMSOIL Arena.
