TOP-RANKED BULLDOGS SHUTS DOWN OMAHA 5-0 AND RUN UNBEATEN STREAK TO SEVEN GAMES

Move over Kasimir Kaskisuo, Alex Stalock and Brant Nicklin -- you now have some company.

Rookie Hunter Miska joined that trio of University of Minnesota Duluth goaltenders Saturday night when he posted his school record-tying fifth shut out of the season in a 5-0 National Collegiate Hockey Conference takedown of the University of Nebraska Omaha. The win, which came in front of a standing-room only crowd of 7,008 at AMSOIL Arena, pushed the top-ranked Bulldogs' unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1).

"I thought our guys did another good job of allowing me to see the puck real well tonight," said Miska, who finished with 27 saves. "It's a great honor to be up there with those three guys and share that record, but we just have to keep focusing and looking forward."

Sophomore right winger Adam Johnson provided UMD with the only goal it would need 12:28 into the first period when the puck he shot from behind the goal line deflected in off Omaha netminder Evan Weninger. Senior left winger Alex Iafallo and freshman right winger Joey Anderson both scored on the power play less than two minutes apart in the second period to extend the Bulldog lead to 3-0 before junior center Avery Peterson, a former Maverick, and sophomore defenseman Neal Pionk tacked on some insurance goals in final seven minutes of regulation.

The Bulldogs (18-5-5 overall; 12-4-2-2 in the NCHC), who picked up five of a possible NCHC six points on the weekend (they won an extra point in a shoot out following a 2-2 overtime tie), won't return to the ice until Feb. 17-18 for a two-game league set at Colorado College.

NOTES: Four of Hunter Miska's five shut outs in 2016-17 have come at home ... The Bulldogs improved to 12-4-2-2 in NCHC play and those 12 victories matches their best NCHC win total ever. That came in the second year of the league (2014-15) when UMD went 12-9-3 ... UMD's current five-game winning streak is its longest since it reeled off seven straight victories between Feb. 26 and March 18 last year ... Alex Iafallo continues to lead the 2016-17 Bulldogs in both goals (13) and points (29) ... Senior center Dominic Toninato, who accounted for both of UMD's two goals Saturday, was credited with a pair of assists in the series rematch.
