Next stop -- the Target Center.
The University of Minnesota Duluth struck for three unanswered goals late in the third period to rally for a 5-3 National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff series-clinching victory over Miami University Saturday night. The Bulldogs, who took down the RedHawks 5-4 in overtime on Friday in the best-of-three series opener, will now advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff for the second year in a row. That event kicks off Friday at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
The night began in promising fashion for No. 3 UMD (23-6-7 overall) as senior defenseman
Brenden Kotyk scored 2:49 into the first period. That 1-0 lead held up until the 8:59 mark of the second period when rookie defenseman
Nick Wolff wristed in a shot from the left point for his first collegiate goal. Miami (9-20-7 overall), which finished the year on 10-game winless skid, got on the board with a power play score midway through the second period and then added two goals a little less than two minutes apart early in the third period to go up 3-2. Junior center
Jared Thomas got the equalizer with an odd-angle shot at 13:25 of the third period before senior left winger
Alex Iafallo used a highlight-reel move to pot the game-winner two minutes later. Senior center
Dominic Toninato sealed the victory with an empty net goal with 55 seconds to go in regulation.
UMD, which is unbeaten in 14 of its last 15 games (11-1-3), outshot the RedHawks 36-24 on the night, including 16-4 in the first period. Bulldog rookie goaltender
Hunter Miska, making his 30th consecutive start had 21 saves.
"I really liked out first period tonight," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin. "We got that 2-0 lead, but I know Miami wasn't going to go away. They got some momentum after their first goal and they built off that, but there never was any panic on our bench."
This marked the second time in as many years the Bulldogs punched their ticket to the Frozen Faceoff at the expense of Miami.
