The University of Minnesota looked to bounce back on Tuesday afternoon from a pair of losses and took care of business -- downing Ashland University in a 11-4 victory. The Bulldogs outhit AU 15-9 and played a clean defensive game to power to the win.
UMD wasted little time getting on the board, as sophomore first baseman
Tyler Wojciechowski rolled a single through the right side to drive in junior outfielder
Brett Milazzo and take a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Ashland quickly tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning, but another RBI by Wojciechowski in the third innings put the Bulldogs back on top.
Freshman
Rece Dietrich was efficient all afternoon, coasting through six innings and allowing just two runs with three strikeouts and a walk. Dietrich faced eight straight batters between the third and fifth inning without allowing a hit on his way to shutting out the Eagles in three consecutive innings.
With a 4-2 lead heading to the sixth inning, UMD found the hot bats and put up four runs to extend its lead to six. The Bulldogs picked up two of their runs in a rather unconventional way -- junior
Tyler Midas and senior
Grant Farley both scored on the same wild pitch as the ball kicked away towards the UMD dugout. Senior outfielder
Matt Vogt added another run with a sacrifice fly before junior
Colin Baumgard knocked a double to left field to drive in senior catcher
Marco Lucarelli.
It was junior right-hander
Alex Ferguson who took care of business from there, tossing three innings while allowing two runs and striking out four to close out the Bulldog victory.
Farley posted a pair of hits (including a triple) in three at bats with an RBI, while Wojciechowski went 2-for-6 with 2 RBI. Sophomore second basemen
Eric Yachinich notched two hits and scored a run for UMD.
Dietrich picked up his first collegiate win, while Pat Carlozzi was tagged with the loss for Ashland.
The Bulldogs will return to the field tomorrow morning for a doubleheader against No. 9 Grand Valley State University, beginning at 8:45 a.m. (CST).
