BATS QUIET FOR BULLDOGS IN 3-1 LOSS TO WALSH

In a crisp-moving finale to the University of Minnesota Duluth's road trip in Auburndale, Fla., Walsh University used a solid pitching performance to hold down the Bulldog offense and capture a 3-1 victory.

Junior pitcher Nick Dorfman garnered the start on the mound, retiring the opening eight batters of the game before surrendering a single to shortstop James Thomas in the third inning, but avoided harm by striking out the following batter to shut down the Cavaliers through three frames.

Senior outfielder Matt Vogt continued his hot streak, lacing a double to right center field to kick off the top-half of the fourth inning for his second hit of the morning. Freshman infielder Chase Thomas knocked a hard ground ball past the diving third basemen for an RBI double to bring home Vogt, scoring the game's first run to put the Bulldogs on top.

Walsh answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together three hits to score two runs on a 2-RBI double by Austin Szink to jump in front 2-1. The Cavaliers later tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a UMD error to extend their lead to two.

From there, it was decided by the Walsh pitching staff, who combined to throw nine innings of one-run baseball -- allowing six hits and striking out 13 batters.

Dorfman posted an efficient outing as well, tossing six innings with two earned runs, while senior Kevin Stocke and freshman Travis Berg pitched the remainder of the game scoreless.

Vogt finished the morning with a 2-for-4 line, scoring the only run for the Bulldogs. Four other players notched a hit -- junior outfielder Brett Milazzo, freshman catcher Reid Rubio, senior shortstop Brian Pierce, and Thomas.

UMD moves to 3-7 on the season and will head back to Minnesota before traveling to face Upper Iowa University on March 18.
