Alex Iafallo added another postseason honor to his burgeoning portfolio today when the University of Minnesota Duluth senior left winger was named All-USCHO first team. A pair of his teammates -- sophomore defenseman
Neal Pionk and rookie goaltender
Hunter Miska -- attained third team status giving the Bulldogs three All-USCHO honorees, the second most of any school in the country.
Earlier this month, Iafallo was named a first-team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association. His other 2016-17 citations included a selection to the All-National Collegiate Hockey Conference first team and as the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Most Valuable Player. He closed out his collegiate career on a 15-game scoring streak and, in the process, became the first first Bulldog to crack the 50-point plateau in five seasons, racking up 21 goals and 30 assists. Iafallo, an Eden, N.Y., native and the reigning NCHC scoring champion, joined Pionk on the Frozen Four All-Tournament Team and Miska on both the NCAA West Regional and Frozen Faceoff All-Tournament Teams.
Pionk was an All-NCHC and All-College Hockey News second team pick in 2016-17 who ranked fifth among all NCAA defenseman in scoring with a career high 34 points. The Hermantown, Minn., product also tied for fourth in assists (27) and sported the sixth best plus-minus figure (+24).
Miska, who two days ago signed an entry-level contract with the National Hockey League's Arizona Coyotes, tied a program single-season record for shutouts (five) while posting a 2.20 goals against average and a .920 saves percentage. A Top 5 Finalist for the 2016-17 Mike Richter Award (most outstanding collegiate goal in the nation), Miska finished third among all NCAA puckstoppers in winning percentage (.797 off a 27-5-5 mark) and victories (27, the second-highest single-season total in team history). He was unbeaten in 19 of his final 20 appearances as a Bulldog (16-1-3) with that lone loss coming to the University of Denver (3-2) in the NCAA Frozen Four title game. The Stacy, Minn., native started 36 straight games to close out the year, and wound up turning in both the fourth-best single-season goals against average and saves percentage in program history.
