It was a highly anticipated match up that ended the wrong way.
The University of Minnesota Duluth was riding high as it came into the match on a four-game winning streak to start the year, and it was hoping to extract revenge for a 5-0 shutout the previous season to their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe, Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Bulldogs and the Mavericks were deadlocked after 90 minutes of regulation. UMD outlasted every jab Minnesota State could muster. The No. 15 club in the nation according to the United Soccer Coaches Division II poll tabbed a season-high 32 shot attempts and the defense could standing. The last shot, however, delivered a gut-wrenching blow Saturday afternoon in Duluth, Minn. in a 1-0 defeat.
Morgan Cottew scored in the middle of the first overtime helping the Mavericks (3-1-0, 1-0-0 NSIC) inch past the Buldogs (4-1-0, 1-1-0 NSIC) to end their best start in program history since 2000. UMD cleared a free kick into the box and Mavs' Morgan Seemuth sent it right back in. Cottew managed to somehow get behind the backline and back-heeled the ball over junior goalkeeper
Sisley Ng in the 95th minute.
Ng collected 10 saves which matched a career-high set most recently on Oct. 16, 2016 versus Southwest Minnesota State University. The defense played a huge role in helping Ng keep the Mavericks off the board for the first 94 minutes. The Bulldogs blocked a team-high eight shots and only allowed 12 of their 32 shots on goal. The defense even made a save with Ng out of net after she redirected a cross. The backline consisting of seniors
Emily Fleissner and
Anna Morrison and junior
Lizzy Fontes played all 94-plus minutes of action.
The late dispersing fog hanging over Malosky Stadium gave way to cloudy conditions as the sun tried to break through the clouds. UMD tried to do the same but it was swallowed up by the defense as they flung four shots on goal despite the barrage of shots it defended. Junior
Natalie St. Martin had the best looking chance in the 13th minute. The forward split three defenders on a goalie bomb up the middle of the field. As the ball carried, St. Martin darted by three Mavericks to corral the ball and pushed her open lane look just above the crossbar. The final opportunity later arrived when junior forward
Destiny Schmitz buzzed in between the defense and scorched her ball into the jumping arms of the Mavs' keeper. On the day, the Bulldogs managed to weave through the opposition and take 10 shots.
The Bulldogs are back on the Malosky Stadium pitch tomorrow for a showdown against Concordia University, St. Paul. The Golden Bears won 1-0 this afternoon toppling St. Cloud State University. The first kick on Sunday is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
