CONVERY BACKSTOPS NO. 5 BULLDOGS TO 1-0 WIN OVER PENN STATE

It took the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team less than two minutes to net all the offense it would need Friday night, thanks to goaltending of Jessica Convery.

The Bulldogs defeated Penn State University 1-0 at AMSOIL Arena in the first ever meeting between the two programs.  It also marks the fifth straight season UMD has opened its season unbeaten.

"It was nice to get the win, and it's always big to get the win in the Friday game," said head coach Maura Crowell.  "It was good to get the early goal, but I would have liked to get a couple more.  Penn State was well organized and well coached and was frustrating to play against, and I am glad we persevered through it."

The lone goal of the contest came from Bulldog sophomore defenseman Jalyn Elmes from the point.  Rookie forward Ashton Bell collected the puck behind the net and found Elmes at the point.  Elmes attempted backdoor pass disappeared in a crowded slot and beat Nittany Lion goaltender Hannah Ehressmann through the five-hole at 1:22 of the first period.

Unable to get a shot off until midway through the opening period, PSU outshot UMD 11-8 in the second period.  Convery — a senior transfer from Mercyhurst University playing in her first game as Bulldog — stonewalled the Nittany Lions offensive effort, and turned away all 22 shots she faced.

UMD put one more shot on goal (23), than PSU did (22), and both teams were scoreless on the power play.  The Bulldogs had three extra skater attempts and the Nittany Lions with two.

The two squads will close the series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at AMSOIL.

BULLDOG NOTES:  Both Ashton Bell and Ryleigh Houston picked up assists on Jalyn Elmes' goal, their first UMD points ... Elmes' goal was the third of her Bulldog career and first game-winning tally.
