BULLDOGS HALT YELLOWJACKET COMEBACK WITH 74-68 VICTORY

Coming off an up and down road weekend that included a 71-52 loss to Winona State followed by a 72-69 win over Upper Iowa, the University of Minnesota Duluth withstood a University of Wisconsin-Superior comeback. The 138th meeting between the two teams went the Bulldogs' way for the seventh straight time as they lead the all-time border battle 94-44.

With 8:48 remaining and the score at 65-45 in favor of the Bulldogs, the Yellowjackets prompted their attempted comeback by going on a 21-4 run to pull within three points. Wisconsin-Superior (4-12; 2-5 UMAC), a Division III program of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, stood knocking on the door with under a minute remain before sophomore forward Brandon Myer cleaned up a missed free throw by laying it in to give UMD a five-point lead.

The Bulldogs (8-9; 4-7 NSIC) held on from there. Junior forward Sean Burns laid one in after swiping the ball away with 17 seconds remaining to effectively put the game out of reach. Behind a 31-point effort, Myer led the way behind a career-high 12 made field goals. In his past 10 games, Myer has scored 20 or more points nine times. (Scored 20 or more just once in the first seven games.)

Wisconsin-Superior was under assault by the length and physicality of the Bulldogs. The Yellowjackets turned the ball over 11 times, seven in the first half alone, and got roughed up in the paint (36-26). UMD scored 15 points off turnovers and eight off the fast break. The Bulldogs dominated the offensive glass. Four players had at least two offensive boards with Burns out hustling the defense for three second chances.

Senior forward Jake Wilson provided a jumpstart off the bench with his keen eye, piling up four assists which tied his career high while sophomore guard Logan Rohrscheib provided UMD with a perimeter spark, connecting on 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs, a team that has been a threat from the free throw line this season by shooting 76.8 percent (good for fourth in the NSIC), shot a dismal 52.4 percent (11-for-21).

UMD, winners of the last three at Romano Gymnasium, will remain at home to take on Minnesota State University-Moorhead and Northern State University this weekend. Actions begins Friday versus the Dragons at 8:00 p.m.
