Neither team shot partially well as both defenses kept the opposing offensives off balance but the University of Minnesota Duluth made more plays near the end of the game to pull off a 62-57 win over Bemidji State University at Romano Gymnasium. The Bulldogs (6-8, 3-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) were consistent from the floor as they shot 41.4 percent in both halves displaying identical 12-for-29 shooting halves. The Beavers (6-9, 3-7 NSIC) combined to make 37. 5 percent. Bemidji State had a five-point lead with over four minutes to play but similar to last night, UMD went on a late rally to win the game. The Bulldogs, who closed last night's win over the University of Minnesota Crookston with a 12-2 run, slammed the door on the Beavers with another 12-2 run tonight.
The Bulldog defense allowed season lows in points and field goal percentage as they won four of the last five and took a weekend sweep for the first time since Jan. 9-10, 2016. They have also capped off its third straight win at home, a first since the 2015-16 season when they posted seven straight home victories. UMD has outscored its opponents in the second half in the last five games. Tonight also marked the fifth win with a game decided by five points or less (5-1).
Sophomore guard
Trevor Entwisle, who played hero the night before, got the rally clicking again when he found sophomore forward
Brandon Myer for a deep center three. Entwisle found a driving
Logan Rohrscheib the following possession and Rohrscheib drew the foul and made both free throws. Entwisle tied the game with a drive to the paint of his own. The turning point tonight came from a big man.
Sophomore forward
Luke Harris popped out on a screen and nailed the go-ahead three-pointer with 73 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 60-57. In three of the last four BSU possessions, Harris had three defensive rebounds and made a heads up play with seconds remaining on his last one. The Beavers' Christian Pekarek had his layup bounce hard off the rim and Harris pulled down the miss and immediately flipped the ball to the Bulldogs' best free throw shooter in Rohrscheib, who got fouled and put to the line. Rohrscheib, a 90.1 percent free-throw shooter for the season, knocked down his 42nd and 43rd straight free throws to clinch the game. UMD held BSU without a field goal for the remaining 3:45.
Myer led all scorers with 21 points but had his streak of leading the team in scoring and rebounds come to an end. Junior forward
Sean Burns and junior guard
Mamadou Ngom each grabbed a share of the team-high eight boards. Entwisle had six assists which tied his career high. The Bulldogs had five blocks on the night.
UMD heads out on the road next weekend as it travels to Winona State University and Upper Iowa University before returning home to host Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University the following weekend.
