A couple of lengthy runs may have come to an end, but the offensive muscle-flexing sure didn't.
Coming off an 8-0 throttling of Western Michigan University in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference series opener 24 hours earlier, the University of Minnesota Duluth did not take its foot off the proverbial pedal on Saturday and cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Broncos in its final regular season road assignment of the year.
The No. 9 Bulldogs, who have now won four straight, picked up right where they left off on Friday by striking for two goals (from sophomore right winger
Billy Exell and sophomore defenseman
Nick Wolff) in the first 3:07 of play. Sophomore left winger
Riley Tufte struck on the power play (his team-leading 15th score of the year) with 1:33 to go before the first intermission to up the lead to 3-0 for the Bulldogs, who would go on to outshoot the hosts 13-4 in that opening period. Cam Lee's man advantage goal midway through the second period snapped UMD's streak of consecutive penalty kills at 41 (which encompassed at least parts of some 11 games) and sophomore goaltender
Hunter Shepard's run of scoreless minutes at 222:00. Exell answered four minutes later for the first two-goal night of his career and junior center
Peter Krieger (power play) and senior center
Jared Thomas each tacked on third-period goals.
In all, nine Bulldogs marked in the points column, including Tufte, who also had a pair of assists.
Shepard, making his 29th straight start, recorded 19 saves while improving to 18-11-3 on the year.
UMD (18-13-3 overall; 12-10-0-0 NCHC), will close out the 2017-18 regular season with a two-game series against the University of Nebraska-Omaha next Friday and Saturday night (March 2-3) at AMSOIL Arena.
