Few teams are spreading the offensive wealth around like the Bulldogs, and that hockey was in full display again Saturday afternoon at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.
Five different players registered goals for the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team -- including three different scorers over the third period alone -- in the Bulldogs 5-2 redemption win over Bemidji State University. The win again gives UMD sole possession of fourth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
"That felt like playoff hockey -- scratching and clawing for every puck, tied late in the game, emotions high," said UMD assist coach
Laura Bellamy. "To get three points today was big for us. I thought we played gutsy hockey and to get goals from five different players is a huge positive moving forward."
UMD's win didn't without a fight. BSU struck first on a shot from the point that was tipped in by Briana Jorde just 2:30 in the opening period. The Bulldogs battled back late in the frame on freshman
Gabbie Hughes' team-high 11th goal of the season. Hughes, from the doorstep, tucked a rebound past Beaver goaltender Lauren Bench to draw UMD even at 1-1.
Early in the second period, the Bulldogs took their first lead of the series on sophomore
Ryleigh Houston's put back rebound on the far post at the 2:39 mark. Houston's goal, assisted by
Kylie Hanley and
McKenzie Hewett, was UMD's first lead in 106:32 minutes of action on the weekend.
UMD's lead didn't survive the rest of the period, however, and Clair DeGeorge beat Bulldog goaltender
Emma Soderberg from the left circle to tie the game again at 2-2 at 15:21.
After UMD put twice as many shots on goal in the second period as BSU (12-6), the Bulldogs finally hit pay-dirt with their revived offensive effort at 8:12 of the third period. Sophomore
Anna Klein started the onslaught, and beat Bench over her right shoulder on the far post for the 3-2 go-ahead tally. UMD doubled its lead when
Anneke Linser connected with a puck skirting the crease 1:30 later.
Linser guaranteed the Bulldog blowout when the rookie forward forced a BSU defenseman into a turnover near the extended goal line. Linser fed
Ashton Bell in the slot, and Bell buried her fourth goal of the season at 16:52 to seal UMD's 5-2 comeback triumph.
The win was the third of the year (and of the career) for Soderberg, who turned aside 23 shots in the win. Bench made 22 saves for the Beavers, who fall to 8-14-1 overall and 5-8-1 in league play, and had their seven-game home winning streak snapped in the loss.
The Bulldogs (8-10-2, 5-7-2-2) will finally get to skate at AMSOIL Arena when they host No. 8 Ohio State University in a Friday (7:07 p.m.) and Saturday (4:07 p.m.) series.
