The University of Minnesota Duluth drop their first game of the weekend, 1-0, to Winona St. at Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn. The Bulldogs now have a 4-7-1 record (2-6-1 in the NSIC).
The Bulldogs started off the game slow, putting up a single shot on target from freshman forward Tiana DeGrande that got deflected off the last defender on the line, then would put another shot that was held onto by Warriors goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz, though the shot was headed wide left. UMD's sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Grenz recorded six saves in the first half.
The Bulldogs did come out more aggressive in the second half, recording 13 shots (seven on net). Sophomore midfielder Julia Osborne would rip one off the crossbar. UMD, despite outshooting Winona State 13-3 (7-2 on net) would not be able to find the back of the net in the second half.
Jaida Wiege would find the back of the net in the 69th minute, scoring the lone goal for the Warriors. She would break away from the Bulldogs defenders on the right side of the box and put one past Grenz on the left side.
Junior forward Holly Kaboord led the Bulldogs with four shots and senior forward Logan Nash had three shots. Freshmen forwards Tiana Degrande and Sarah Stange, sophomore midfielder Ebelin Morales Benites and senior midfielder Emily Hinz would finish with two shots. Grenz would finish the game with eight total saves. UMD finished the evening with 18 shots (eight on net), Winona State finished with 11 shots (nine on net).
The Bulldogs will host Upper Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Malosky at noon.
