BULLDOGS PUT UP STRONG EFFORT, LOSE IN DOUBLE OT

The University of Minnesota Duluth took on the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Friday evening, falling to SMSU in the second overtime with a final of 3-2. The Bulldogs fall to 4-8-2 overall (2-7-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference). The Mustangs improve to 7-6-0 overall (5-6-0 in the NSIC).
 
The first half didn't see much action in terms of scoring, with no goals happening until 30 minutes into the first half when UMD's senior forward was able to put a shot by SMSU's goalkeeper Amanda Haimes. The goal came off a pass from the Bulldogs senior forward Nan Glinsek. UMD would finish with a total of 10 shots in the first half (five of them being on net). The Mustangs would finish with four shots (three hitting the net).
 
The second half would see significantly more action, coming earlier on. SMSU would find the back of the net twice in the matter of 39 seconds, both coming from forward Alli Miskowiec. The first was unassisted, while the second came from forward Abbey Hoisngton. The Goals were scored in the 57th and 58th minute. It would take time, but the Bulldogs would battle their way back to a tie in the 84th minute, a shot coming from senior midfielder Emily Hinz, scoring her seventh of the season, an assist coming from Nash. UMD would force overtime.
 
The first overtime saw only one shot coming from the Bulldogs, while the Mustangs put up three shots in the first overtime, with neither team finding the twine forcing a second overtime.
 
UMD would would put up a hard battle, but were unable to stop SMSU, with Miskowiec scoring her third of the game and putting up a hat trick in the evening. Hoisington would get her second assist on the game winner.
 
The Bulldog would finish the effort with 22 shots (11 being on net), while the Mustangs would put up 12 (only seven finding the net). Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Grenz put up four saves in the game. Hinz would finish with a match high six shots, four being on net and one goal. Nash would finish with five shots, putting two on net, scoring one and getting one assist. Glinsek would put up four shots with one being on net.
 
The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday, taking on the University of Sioux Falls Cougars in Sioux Falls, SD at noon.
