BULLDOGS OUTLAST MICHIGAN TECH HUSKIES IN THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball program continued its win streak on Sunday afternoon, taking down Michigan Tech in a 69-59 battle. The Bulldogs move to 3-3 overall, finishing out the non-conference portion of their schedule.
 
Junior forward Payton Kahl opened the scoring early by making a layup in the opening four seconds, followed by MTU making one of their own. UMD would counter by gaining a four point lead on the Huskies, with baskets made from sophomore forward Brook Olson and sophomore guard Maesyn Thiesen. The Bulldogs would continue to put the pressure on MTU and keep the lead throughout the rest of the first quarter, and head into the second with a 14-12 lead. UMD would hop out to early scoring in the second, grabbing a five point lead out the gate when junior guard Ann Simonet would drain a three. The Bulldogs kept building from there on, with Thiesen dropping in a three in the final second to grab a 12 point lead before halftime would come, 36-24.
 
Olson opened the scoring in the second half with a quick layup off a pass from Thiesen. UMD continued to power their way through the Huskies defense, making shots in tight. The Bulldogs were able force an MTU timeout while leading, 42-26. UMD would hold a lead on the Huskies, with MTU not getting any closer than nine in the quarter, with the Bulldogs scoring 17 and the Huskies putting up 20. Scoring slowed in the fourth quarter, with the first two points going to MTU 2:49 into the fourth quarter. Scoring was few and far between, with nine points being scored between the two squads in the first five minutes of the closing frame. UMD was able to edge out the Huskies in the final frame, putting up 16 while MTU was only able to score 15.
 
The Bulldogs would shoot at a 44.6% (25-56) from the floor, dropping four threes and 43 total rebounds. Thiesen would lead the way on the offensive side, dropping 13 points while shooting 40% (4-10) and grabbing four rebonds. Junior forward Sarah Grow would drop 12 points on the afternoon, grabbing eight rebounds of her own. Olson would snag 11 points on the day, grabbing nine rebounds. Senior forward Katie Stark dropped in nine points and had a game leading 11 rebounds and two assists.
 
UMD will open up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play by hosting St. Cloud State University on Sat. Nov. 30.
