Both the University of Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State University had ample power play opportunities Saturday night, but it was the visiting Mavericks who made the most of them.
Top-ranked Minnesota State cashed in on its first three chances with the man advantage and went on to take down the No. 8 Bulldogs 3-1 to become the first non-conference foe to sweep UMD in Duluth since Bemidji State University turned the trick back on Oct. 7-8, 2005. The Mavericks, who prevailed over their former Western Collegiate Hockey Association rivals 4-1 on Friday, hiked their winning streak to seven games while improving to 12-1-1 on the season.
Paid attendance for UMD's 2019 home finale was 5,103 although only 1,200 spectators braved blizzard conditions to take in the contest.
Jake Jaremko's power play goal at midway through first period gave Minnesota State a 1-0 lead, which held up until the 7:23 mark of the third period when a shot from UMD junior defenseman
Dylan Samberg deflected in off junior center Justin Richard's skate and past Maverick goaltender Dryden McKay. That goal, which came while the Bulldogs' were a man up, was the third of the year for Richards, who was appearing in his 100th collegiate game.
It took the Mavericks less than two minutes to regain the lead, however, courtesy of another power play score by Lucas Sowder before Jaremko sealed the deal with his second goal of the night with 7:20 to go in regulation.
The Bulldogs (7-6-1 overall), in their final home appearance of 2019, went 1-for-5 on the power play and outshot the Mavericks 38-24 (although 10 of those shots were generated with the man advantage).
"I thought we were a better hockey team than last night," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin, whose Bulldogs came into the evening ranking third in the country in both power play goals (17) and power play opportunities (30.4 percent). "They capitalized on their power plays and we didn't and that certainly hurt. We've got to go work on the penalty kill because difference came down to special teams."
UMD will pay a visit to Omaha, Neb., next Friday and Saturday (Dec. 6-7) to take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha in a pair of National Collegiate Hockey Conference clashes.
