The University of Minnesota Duluth took on the University of Wisconsin Superior on Monday evening for its first and only exhibition match of the season. The Bulldogs would walk away with a win in the game, putting 77 points on the board to the Yellowjackets 65.
UMD would shoot 50.9% on the evening, going 28-55 and racking up 26 rebounds. UWS would shoot 50% from the floor, going 23-46 and grabbing 30 rebounds.
The first half consisted of back and forth action for both teams as they both played in their first matches of the season. The Bulldogs would score first off of a lay-up by senior forward
Alex Illikainen. UMD would shoot at a 41.4% for the half, with Illikainen totaling 10 points and grabbing six rebounds on the half, freshman guard
Jack Middleton would finish the half shooting 3-5 from the floor, putting up eight points in the process and dropping two 3-pointers. Senior forward
Brandon Myer would grab two rebounds and drop in five points.
The second half saw more action right off the get go. The Bulldogs would open up the scoring in the second with Illikainen making a 2-pointer from the paint. UMD and UWS would stay tight in the second, with the Yellowjackets dropping 41 in the half to keep pace with the Bulldogs 45, but unable to catch the 12 point deficit that UMD had built up in the game.
The Bulldogs would shoot at a 61.5% rate, going 16-26 from the floor. Myer would finish the evening going 7-11 from the floor, 1-2 from 3-point range, dropping 19 points. He would grab five rebounds (three offensive, two defensive) on the day. Illikainen would finish with 18 points, going 8-13 and grabbing eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive). Drew Blair would net 15 points, going 4-9 and putting up three 3-pointers on the day. Middleton would nab 14 points of his own, going 5-9 and 3-6 on 3's.
The Bulldogs will open up the regular season in Bethany, Okla., in the GIAC/NSIC Crossover, taking on Southern Nazarene (Nov. 8) and Southeastern Oklahoma State (Nov. 9).
