The University of Minnesota Duluth continued its winning ways inside the West St. Paul Regional Athletic Center as the Bulldogs brought out the brooms to sweep away Concordia University, St. Paul Thursday in non-conference action.
The Bulldogs, who moved to 32-7 all-time inside the sports dome, squashed a seven-inning rally to beat the Golden Bears 6-5 in game one then doubled them up for a 4-2 victory in game two. Concordia St. Paul dropped to 3-3 overall while UMD improved to 3-5.
UMD responded both times after falling behind in the first inning, a situation far too familiar in the early portion of the season. The Bulldogs, who came into today 0-5 when allowing the other to team to score first, fell behind 2-0 in each game.
Senior infielder
Kalynn Tilton mashed five RBI as she collected two hits in the first game. Trailing 2-0, Tilton unloaded the bases with a bases-clearing double in the left-center gap with two outs. Junior infielder
Lauren Oberle and sophomore utility player
Jessica Bren each drew two-out walks with full counts leading up to Tilton's big rip. Later, the Bulldogs got another extra-base hit in the form of junior outfielder
Jayme Langbehn. She drove a ball to dead center and raced to third for a triple. Senior outfielder knocked her the next at-bat and UMD tacked on a needed insurance run.
Tilton gave the Bulldogs a couple more insurance tallies in the fifth as she knocked home Oberle and sophomore infielder
Taylor Koehnen. Oberle and Koehnen each stole bases on a 2-1 count in Tilton's at-bat. The Bulldog baserunners jumped to second and third after taking advantage of a change-up. Tilton rewarded their efforts by knocking them in and giving UMD a 6-2 lead.Â
The Golden Bears answered with three runs in the seventh but were cut down by junior pitcher
Breanna Swint and the Bulldogs for the victory. Swint gathered her first win of the season after strking out eight, tying her season high.
Freshman
Sam Pederson was dazzling again in the circle for the second consecutive outing. Pederson gave up only two runs, no earned, in a complete-game effort. The native of North Branch, Minn. allowed two hits and struck out four Bears for her second win of the season. Concordia St. Paul got rolling again with one in the first and one in the second. The Golden Bears capitalized on a passed ball in the first and then an error in the second to score both runs. Pederson, who beamed three batters in those first two innings, settled things down and retired nine straight batters before issuing a free pass with two outs in the seventh.
UMD got to work on the offenisve end to erase that 2-0 deficit in the fourth inning. Bren, Tilton and junior catcher
Lexi Janigo each got on to start the inning off and Koehnen delivered a RBI-single to right and senior outfielder
Sammi Sadler, who recorded a team-high three hits this afternoon, had a sacrifice fly to tie the game. In the sixth, Langbehn had another rocket to center field which resulted in another sacrifice fly to take the lead. Bren pushed UMD up two in the seventh on an RBI double down the right-field line.
The Bulldogs will be back at it again tomorrow morning as they take on Upper Iowa University in a single contest at the West St. Paul Dome.Â
