Upper Iowa University put up a five-spot in the eighth inning to knock off the University of Minnesota Duluth in extras on Friday morning inside the West St. Paul Regional Athletic Center in West St. Paul, Minn.
The Bulldogs fell into a 3-0 hole before eventually tying it in the sixth inning. The Peacocks came up empty in the last three innings before igniting their offense to take a commanding lead in the eighth and shutting down UMD in the bottom half.
The Bulldogs end the weekend 2-1 in the West St. Paul Dome after sweeping Concordia University, St. Paul the day prior. Today was one of few losses that UMD has suffered in the dome as it is 32-8 lifetime dating back to when it first played in 2013.
Sophomores
Jessica Bren and
Jordyn Thomas each homered in the loss. It was the first home run of the season for Bren while Thomas tabbed her second round-tripper of the season.
The Upper Iowa pitching staff held the Bulldog offense in check expect for the two major mistakes that accounted for all three of UMD's runs. The pitching combination of Jaclyn Thompson, Erin Drahozal and Emily Kisch allowed just three hits and a total of 10 runners all morning. Thompson went the first four innings before being relieved by Drahozal. Drohozal gave up the lead but Kisch retired six of the seven batters she faced for her third victory.
UMD didn't do itself any favors in the field as it made three errors which the Peacocks used to score their first three runs. Upper Iowa scored in the third off a throwing error after UMD gunned down the runner at third who was trying to steal home. The Peacocks added two more in the fourth after a missed catch on a sacrifice bunt that gave an additional out.
Thomas cut the Upper Iowa lead to 3-1 after leading off the fourth inning with a full-count solo bomb to dead center. Bren, two innings later, blasted her homer to left center to tie the game. Senior infielder
Kalynn Tilton led off the sixth with a walk after also working the count full.Â
Freshman pitcher
Sam Pederson got the nod in the circle but lasted three-plus innings. Pederson allowed three runs, all unearned, while striking out one and walking one.
Breanna Swint came in and locked down the Peacocks until they got hot in the eighth. Upper Iowa had six hits including a home run to lead off the eighth.
The Bulldogs (3-6) return to action on March 13 when it plays in the College Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
