Box Score 2 The University of Minnesota Duluth picked up its first win of the young 2019 season by rallying past the University of Sioux Falls 8-7 on Saturday night in Auburndale, Fla., before dropping a 23-3 decision to Northwood University the following day in Kissimmee, Fla.
Senior first baseman
Ben Danielson drew a bases-loaded walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bulldogs to the non-conference triumph over their Northern Sun Conference rival Sioux Falls. UMD had built a 5-0 lead through six innings before the Cougars picked up five runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Trailing 7-5 heading into their final at bats, the Bulldogs evened the score on sophomore second baseman
Anders Brown's two-run single to right field. Two batters later, junior left fielder
Drew Stewart walked to load the bases for Danielson, whose base-on-balls came with two outs.
UMD catcherÂ
Tosten Mann went 2-for-2 with a triple while fellow rookie
McCale Peterson also had a pair of hits for UMD, which was the beneficiaries of 11 walks and three hit batters. Freshman
Zach Matthews, the last of six Bulldogs to toe the rubber, pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up the win. Starter
Rece Dietrich, a junior, went five strong innings, allowing only one hit and fanning five.
In the setback to Northwood (10-3 overall), the Bulldogs (1-2) managed just six hits, including a solo home run by junior right fielder Chris Saltzman in the top of the second inning. Brown picked up a pair of singles for the Bulldogs, who once again used six different pitchers.
UMD will face West Chester University Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. (CT) in Kissimmee.Â
