BULLDOGS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH NOTRE DAME COLLEGE

The University of Minnesota Duluth and Notre Dame College traded wins in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Auburndale, Fla., with the Bulldogs taking the opener 5-3 before the Falcons bounced back with a 9-1 triumph.

Junior right fielder Chris Saltzmann helped key the 5-3 victory by going 2-for-3 and driving in a pair of runs with a base-loaded double in the top of the seventh inning that broke a 3-3 deadlock. UMD, which never trailed in the seven-inning contest, also got a pair of hits from junior left fielder Drew Stewart, who also scored twice. UMD senior Alex Ferguson, in his first start of the season and second appearance, gave up five hits and three earned runs before being lifted for sophomore Sean Flaherty with two outs in the fifth inning. Flaherty struck out three and allowed two hits the rest of the way to even his 2019 record at 1-1.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs (2-4 overall) were outhit 12-5 by Notre Dame (6-9), which broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning and a four-run fifth. Sophomore Anders Brown had the lone extra base hit UMD, a sixth inning double, while senior first baseman Ben Danielson was 1-for-2 and drove in the only UMD run. The Bulldogs were just 1-for-11 with runner on base and 0-for-6 in RBI opportunities. Sophomore Wyatt O'Bey took the loss (0-1) after surrendering eight earned runs and nine hits in four innings of work.

UMD will conclude its seven-day, seven-game stay in the Sunshine State with a nine-inning matchup against Wayne State University on Wednesday morning (8:15 a.m. CT) in Kissimmee.
