BULLDOGS SUFFER A PAIR OF SETBACKS SATURDAY

The University of Minnesota Duluth ended up on the wrong side of a pair of decisions on Saturday in Clermont Fla. The Bulldogs lost 3-1 to No. 22 Southern New Hampshire University and then had their comeback attempt fall short in the afternoon 6-4 defeat to Northwood University. UMD lost back-to-back games in the College Spring Games for the first time since 2015 and now sit 6-9 overall with four non-conference games remaining before the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference slate hits.

Junior infielder Lauren Oberle and sophomore infielder Taylor Koehnen combined to have seven of the Bulldogs' 16 hits this afternoon. Oberle registered four hits including a pair of doubles. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native went 3-for-4 in the second contest and drove in one of the four runs versus the Timberwolves. Koehnen cracked out three hits in six at-bats including a double of her own. In addition, senior outfielder Sammi Sadler and sophomore infielder Jordyn Thomas each collected two hits on day to round out the multi-hit Bulldog producers.

UMD was put to test early in the morning with the 22nd-ranked Penmen. The Bulldogs struck in the top of the first but Southern New Hampshire held UMD to six shutout innings afterwards. The Bulldogs outhit the Penmen 6-4. Thomas nabbed UMD an 1-0 lead with a base hit to score senior outfielder Kalynn Tilton. Southern New Hampshire knotted the game in the third and then took the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs.

Maddy Barone earned her sixth victory for the Penmen locking down the Bulldogs after getting touched up in the opening frame. Freshman pitcher Sam Pederson threw her third straight complete game in the losing effort. Pederson allowed three runs on only four hits and a walk. She struck out two.

The Bulldogs, eager to bounce back, couldn't get the bats rolling until it was too late. Northwood jumped out to the lead after a four-run third inning, hindered by a UMD error which allowed two runs to score. The Bulldogs and freshman infielder Emma Frost sliced the lead to 4-1 after Frost smacked a single to left to score Oberle, who also added an RBI in the fifth on a double down the left-field line. That inning could have been costly as the Bulldogs were gunned down on the base paths for a double play to end the inning.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves continued chipping away as it added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings. UMD grabbed two runs back only to have the rally cut short with the game-winning run at the dish. Koehnen got the bottom of the seventh started with a double and junior Lexi Janigo came off the bench with a clutch two-out pinch-hit RBI. Sophomore infielder Jessica Bren immediately pounced on the next pitch and doubled off the wall in center to make it 6-4. Tilton walked to force the winning run at the plate but the comeback ended there.

The Bulldogs return for two more games tomorrow, starting bright and early with 8:00 am and 10:15 am start times. UMD squares off against St. Micheal's College first before taking on American International College.
