The University of Minnesota Duluth blasted 24 hits and scored a total of 21 runs in a pair of wins on Sunday in Clermont, Fla. The Bulldogs put up a whopping 15 runs in five innings to best St. Michael's College with a 15-0 shutout. A few hours later, UMD (8-9 overall) put the finishing touches on a 6-2 victory over American International College.
The Bulldogs had the opener in hand even before the Purple Knights came up to bat. UMD put up a seven spot in the top of the first inning as it batted around the order. It also scored three more in the third and five times in the fourth as it went around the order for a second time.
The 15-0 shutout was the biggest shutout since 2006 when the Bulldogs picked up a pair of identical 15-0 decisions against Finlandia University and Minnesota State University Moorhead in the same season.
All 15 positional players appeared in the contest and take an at-bat. Ten batters collected a hit as UMD registered 15 hits in total. Junior outfielder
Lauren Greeder, sophomore infielder
Taylor Koehnen, freshman outfielder Emma Thompson, freshman pitcher
Sam Pederson, and senior outfielder
Sammi Sadler all picked up two hits. Koehnen tallied a game-high three RBI while Greeder and Sadler each picked up a pair of RBI as well.
Pederson picked up the win only needing to go three innings. The North Branch, Minn., native gave up just one hit and struck out four on 33 pitches. Sadler came in relief for the final two innings and shut down the Purple Knights allowing a hit while fanning two batters.
The following game, the Bulldogs kept the offense rolling with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to establish early control. They added three insurance runs in the fifth inning for good measure. Junior hurler
Breanna Swint nearly pitched a shutout for UMD. Swint was charged for no earned runs as the two runs scored off her came after a two-out error.
Junior infielder
Lauren Oberle snapped the scoreless game with a looped double to plate leadoff hitter sophomore
Jessica Bren. Oberle scored the next at-bat as Thomas lifted a double of her own to deep center scoring Oberle and Thompson.
Thomas wasn't done as she returned to the dish to deliver the knockout punch four innings later. Bren started the fifth with a triple and Koehnen raced to first on a fielder's choice to leave runners on for Thomas. The lefty tattooed a three-run two-out homer on a pitch left up in the zone. Swint did the rest as she completed all seven innings in the circle for her third win.
UMD wraps up its stay in the Sunshine State tomorrow with a double header against Florida Southern College starting at 2:00 p.m. That double header will be held on the campus of Florida Southern at the Barnett Athletic Complex.
