The University of Minnesota Duluth captured its fourth and fifth straight wins over Wayne State College on Sunday as the Bulldogs corralled 10-0 and 5-2 wins over the Wildcats in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action for their second straight sweep of Wayne State in as many seasons. UMD posted its third shutout of the year finishing off game one in five innings, then needed six innings to conclude the sweep.
The Bulldogs teeter above the .500-mark once again, moving to 13-12 overall and 4-2 in the NSIC. The Wildcats fall to 9-12 and remaining winless in conference action with a double header in store tomorrow against St. Cloud State University.
UMD scored in bunches as the hits piled up, 23 in all for the Bulldogs in the double header. UMD exploded for seven runs in the first two innings in the opener, and it struck four times in the fourth and fifth innings during the night cap.
Eight Bulldogs recorded a hit in the first game. Sophomore infielder
Taylor Koehnen, junior infielder
Lauren Oberle, senior outfielder
Sammi Sadler, and senior infielder
Kalynn Tilton each collected two hits in the opener. Freshman
Bre Bresnahan registered her first collegiate hit on a pinch-hit opportunity in the fifth inning. She would later score the game-deciding run to force the mercy rule. Oberle, Tilton and sophomore
Jessica Bren each drove in a pair of runners in UMD's 10 runs.
The power in the UMD bats returned to the scene with three of its 12 hits landing for home runs in the night cap. Junior catcher
Hannah Bloch homered for the second consecutive day as she parked her fourth homer of her career to right center to even the game 1-1. Oberle homer a couple innings later in the fourth to erase the Wildcats' 2-1 advantage. Oberle's homer was the beginning of a four-run burst. Junior outfielder Jayme Lengbehn gave UMD the lead on a RBI infield single. Junior outfielder
Lauren Greeder reached on a bunt single down the third-base line on a suicide squeeze. Langbehn pushed UMD's lead to 5-2 after scoring on a wild pitch.
Freshman outfielder
Erin Thompson added to the Bulldog lead with a two-RBI single to right. That was the start of three-straight RBI singles as Koehnen and Bren each tallied base-knocks. Freshman infielder
Emma Frost put the finishing touch on game two with a solo shot to left field. Frost and Koehnen were the lone Bulldogs to record multiple hits as UMD had nine hitters gather a base hit.
Freshman
