UMD HOLDS OFF MARY TO COMPLETE FOUR-GAME SWEEP

For the second straight day, the University of Minnesota Duluth used strong starting pitching and timely hitting to sweep a home doubleheader against the University of Mary (12-5 and 6-4) on a windy afternoon at NBC Sports Complex in Superior, Wis.

In the opening Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference triumph, The Bulldogs got on the board early in the second when senior third baseman Eric Yachinich smacked an RBI double to left center, scoring senior left fielder Cory Krolikowski. Later in the frame, UMD would grab the lead when sophomore second baseman Anders Brown laced a single to right and the ball the rolled all the way to the fence when the Marauder right fielder misplayed it. The error would score Yachinich and junior catcher Reid Rubio. Sophomore center fielder Henry George and Rubio would blow the game open for the Bulldogs by each hitting their first career home runs. George's, a two-run blast to center in the fifth, would give UMD a 9-4 lead and Rubio's, a three-run shot also to center, would give UMD a 12-4 lead in the sixth. Rookie right-hander Ben Shepard (2-2), in his fifth start of the 2019 campaign, fanned a career-high seven Marauder batters in 5.2 innings of work. He surrendered four runs on six hits and issued two walks in his eighth appearance on the hill.

In the nonconference series finale, Yachinich's second inning two-run triple bounced over the left fielder's head and sparked a six-run frame for the Bulldogs (12-25 overall and 9-16 in the NSIC). In the next at-bat, rookie catcher Tyler Peterson drove in Yachinich with a double down the left field line. UMD would plate three more runs to grab a 6-1 advantage over Mary (12-26 overall; 8-17 NSIC). Sophomore right-hander Liam Blaschko (1-2), in his third start of the season, tossed an efficient five-plus innings for the Bulldogs, striking out five while surrendering one walk and giving up two runs on three hits. The Marauders rallied in the seventh to cut the Bulldog lead to two runs but senior right-hander Nick Dorfman came in to get the final two outs for his first save as a Bulldog.

The Bulldogs will hit the road for an eight-game road trip beginning Wednesday, April 24, with an NSIC doubleheader at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m.
