BULLDOGS FALL TWICE TO SMSU IN NSIC DOUBLEHEADER

The University of Minnesota Duluth saw it's season-long four-game winning streak come to a close Wednesday when they were swept (8-4 and 9-3) by Southwest Minnesota State University in a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchups in Marshall, Minn.

In the opener, the Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the first inning when junior right fielder Drew Stewart laced a double down the left field line to drive in sophomore center fielder Henry George. George, who has reached base safely in 17 straight games and 25 times out of his last 26 outings, pushed his hitting streak to 11 games. Two batters later, Stewart would come in to score on an infield single from rookie designated hitter Tosten Mann. Senior left fielder Cory Krolikowski would push UMD's lead to 3-0 in the first when his two-out double to center brought in Mann. The Broncos, who scored all eight of their runs with two outs, would answer in the second, third, and fourth innings to claim an 8-3 advantage. Senior right-hander Nick Dorfman (2-3), in his sixth start of the season, was roughed up for seven earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Paul Petit and senior right-hander Alex Ferguson each pitched in relief for the Bulldogs in the setback.

In game two, the Bulldogs (12-27 overall and 9-19 in the NSIC) tallied a run in the first, third, and fifth innings but were unable to hold off the Mustangs (8-22 overall; 7-18 NSIC), who used a four-run fourth inning to take control of the rematch. Sophomore right-hander Wyatt O'Bey got the nod in game two but surrendered four runs on five hits while striking out five and issuing two walks in 3.0 innings of work. Four Bulldog relievers saw time on the mound, including junior Jaylen Hakes, senior Ben Danielson, senior Evan Vick, and senior Jeremy Thorson.

The Bulldogs will continue their final regular-season road trip Saturday, April 27, when they travel to Minot, N.D. to take on Minot State in a NSIC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
