Jessica Bren inserted herself in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference double header with Upper Iowa University and flat-out dominated at the dish on Saturday.
The University of Minnesota Duluth sophomore catcher put forth a memorable outing as she went 5-for-5 with a double, four home runs for nine RBI in the Bulldogs' sweep over the Peacocks. UMD won 11-4 and 8-0 in six innings.
Bren, who also walked three times and added a sacrifice fly, launched her first of four homers in her opening at-bat of the day. The native of Victoria, Minn., zipped a 1-1 pitch down the left-field line just fair of the foul pole.
And she wasn't done.
After wreaking havoc with Peacock pitching, Bren hammered Upper Iowa with three home runs in the opener – going deep in the second with a three-run shot and again in the fifth with a solo bomb. Bren just missed out on a homer in the fourth, doubling off the wall. She didn't get a chance to add to her seven-RBI total in game one as she was walked in her final plate appearance.
The Peacocks (21-18; 13-11 NSIC) tried to stay away from Bren in game two but she went yard, yet again, in the sixth bringing her home run total this season to nine, tying junior shortstop
Lauren Oberle for the team lead. Bren has been on fire as of late with seven home runs in the last seven games.
Junior pitcher
Breanna Swint was overshadowed by Bren's offensive onslaught. Swint tossed a complete-game two-hitter as she earned her first shutout of the season in the 8-0 win. Swint nailed down her 12th win as she struck out four on 77 pitches.
Oberle and sophomore first baseman
Jordyn Thomas each tallied two hits in the frontend of the twinbill. Thomas hit her eighth home run of the season, going back-to-back with Bren in the first inning. Senior outfielder
Sammi Sadler and freshman third baseman
Emma Frost each compiled a pair of base hits in game two. Seven Bulldogs drove in runs in the second game as UMD jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after batting around the lineup.
The Bulldogs (26-17; 17-7 NSIC) will end their six-game road trip on Wednesday (April 24) at Minnesota State University Moorhead with the NSIC double header beginning at 2:00 p.m.
