University of Minnesota Duluth sophomore defenseman Mikey Anderson, the reigning Hockey Commissioner's National of Player of Month for March and April, has signed a three-year entry level contract with the National Hockey League's Los Angeles Kings and thus will forgo his final two seasons of collegiate eligibility.Â
Anderson, a native of Roseville, Minn., and a fourth-round pick of the Kings (103rd overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft, established a career highs in a number of statistical categories this past season with the two-time NCAA champion Bulldog, including goals (six), assists (21), points (27), and plus-minus rating (+22). Along the way he was chosen to both the NCAA Frozen Four and National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff All-Tournament teams as well as earning All-NCHC honorable mention honors. From March 1 on, he paced the NCAA in scoring with 14 points and assists (12). This past January, Anderson captained the Team USA to a silver medal finish at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships after helping the squad capture a bronze medal one year earlier.
Anderson is the 19th Bulldog since 2007 -- and second this spring --Â to leave UMD early for the professional ranks, joining forwards Mason Raymond (with Vancouver in 2007), Rob Bordson (Anaheim in 2010), Mike Connolly (San Jose in 2011), J.T. Brown (Tampa Bay in 2012),Caleb Herbert (Washington in 2014), Adam Johnson (Pittsburgh in 2017), his older brother, Joey Anderson (New Jersey in 2018), and Riley Tufte (Dallas in 2019), defensemen Matt Niskanen (Dallas in 2007), Jason Garrison (Florida in 2008), Evan Oberg (Vancouver in 2009), Dylan Olsen (Chicago in 2010), Justin Faulk (Carolina in 2011), Chris Casto (Boston in 2013) and Neal Pionk (New York Rangers in 2017) and goaltenders Alex Stalock (San Jose in 2009), Kasimir Kaskisuo (Toronto in 2016) and Hunter Miska (Phoenix in 2017).
