The University of Minnesota Duluth capped off the 2019 regular season by posting wins over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wins over St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University-Mankato Saturday at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center.
The Bulldogs, who opened the weekend with a 7-2 non-conference setback at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday afternoon, hiked their overall record to 11-4 (for the program's most victories in 12 years) and tied for third place in the final NSIC standings (their highest league finish since 2007 when they were members of the now-defunct North Central Conference) with an 8-3 mark.
Freshman Ally Tiedermann (No. 5 singles) and sophomore
Isabel Thiner (No. 6 single) were the lone two Bulldogs to pick up wins in Friday's bout with Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Those two teamed up to prevail twice at No. 3 doubles on Saturday as did sophomore
Natalie Cahill and rookie
Sophie Lynch at No. 2. Against St. Cloud State, UMD got singles victories from Cahill (No. 3 in straight sets), Lynch (No. 4 in straight sets) and Thiner, who sealed the triumph with a three-set grinder. The Bulldogs swept the three doubles matches from Minnesota State (with junior team co-captains
Megan Anderson and
Elsa Erickson coming through at No. 1) and then Cahill (No. 3), Lynch (No. 4) and Tiedermann (No. 5) closed out the match with straight set triumphs.
Cahill (12-2), Thiner (10-1) and Tiedemann (10-2) have all eclipsed the double-digit mark for single wins this season while Lynch is 9-3.
The Bulldogs will take on the University of Mary in the quarterfinal round of the NSIC Tournament next Saturday (April 13) at the Lifetime Fitness in Minnetonka, Minn. It will mark UMD's third straight appearance in that event.
