BULLDOGS SWAP NSIC WINS WITH BEMIDJI STATE FRIDAY

In their first two games of the season at Bulldog Park, The University of Minnesota Duluth dropped the first matchup but broke out in the nightcap to salvage a split (3-2 and 12-2) in Friday's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Bemidji State University.

In the opening setback, the Bulldogs squandered a 2-1 advantage in the final two innings. UMD got their lone pair of runs of the game in the fourth inning when rookie designated hitter Tosten Mann laced a single right back up the middle to drive in junior right fielder Drew Stewart. Later in the frame, the Bulldogs would grab their first and only lead of the game on a base hit from senior left fielder Cory Krolikowski, scoring Stewart. Junior lefty Rece Dietrich, in his ninth start of the season, surrendered two runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking zero batters in 5.1 innings of work. Sophomore right-handers Paul Petit (1-1), who was tagged with the loss in his fourteenth appearance, and Liam Blaschko pitched in relief for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs (14-33 overall and 11-24 in the NSIC) cashed in for 12 runs on 13 hits in game two. Mann got things going in the first when his base hit drove in Stewart. Krolikowski followed suit with a two-run double to right field to score rookie shortstop McCale Peterson and Mann. The Bulldogs used four doubles to drive five runners in. Mann, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the rematch, finished off the Beavers (8-36 overall; 6-25 NSIC) via the ten-run rule in the seventh with a two-run blast, the first of his Bulldog career. Senior right-hander Alex Ferguson (1-1), in his third start of the 2019 campaign, tossed five innings and gave up two runs on eight hits while fanning eight and issuing zero walks. Ferguson's eight strikeouts matched a career-high he set on March 29, 2018, a 7-3 triumph over Upper Iowa University. Blaschko came in relief for his second appearance of the afternoon, he gave up no runs on three hits while striking out one and walking one in 2.0 innings of work.

The Bulldogs and Beavers will square off again tomorrow in another doubleheader at Bulldog Park. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
