BULLDOGS CLOSE OUT 2019 SEASON WITH TWINBILL SWEEP OF BEMIDJI STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth capped off the 2019 campaign Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep (12-2 and 4-3) of Bemidji State University at Bulldog Park in Duluth, Minn.

In game one, the lone Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup of the afternoon, rookie shortstop McCale Peterson struck first for UMD, lacing a double down the left field line to drive in rookie first baseman Tosten Mann. Two batters later, senior third baseman Eric Yachinich would bring Mann in by blasting a two-run home run. With that second inning homer, Yachinich finishes his Bulldog career with seven long balls, two coming this season. Peterson, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, would strike again in the third inning, with another double, this time scoring Mann and junior right fielder Drew Stewart. The Bulldogs would add four more in the fifth and three runs in the seventh to complete their second consecutive 12-2 victory over the Beavers. Senior right-hander Nick Dorfman (3-3), in his eighth start of the season, threw a commanding 6.0 innings to earn the win and close out his Bulldog career on the mound. He surrendered only two runs on three hits while fanning five and issuing two walks. Junior righty Jaylen Hakes closed the door on the Beavers, tossing the seventh and final inning.

In the nonconference rematch, the Bulldogs (15-33 overall and 12-24 in the NSIC) used a three-run first inning to take an early advantage over the the Beavers (8-38 overall; 6-26 NSIC). Senior catcher Ben Danielson opened the scoring with a double to right field, scoring fellow senior third baseman Eric Yachinich. Later in the frame, senior first baseman Alex Ferguson singled to right and drove in Hakes and Danielson. In the sixth, Sophomore second baseman Anders Brown drove in Stewart for the go-ahead run on a base hit to right field. Senior right-hander Jeremy Thorson, in his first start of the season and as a Bulldog, got the nod in the final outing of his UMD career. In 4.1 innings of work, Thorson gave up two runs on one hit while striking out six and walking none. His six strikeouts were a personal, single-game, career high as a Bulldog. Leading 4-3 in the seventh inning, rookie right-hander Ben Shepard came in and picked up two strikeouts to help collect his first career save.

Eight Bulldog seniors closed out their UMD careers Saturday, including Danielson, Dorfman, Ferguson, Cory Krolikowski, Thorson, Evan Vick, Tyler Wojciechowski, and Yachinich.
