BULLDOGS KNOCK OFF DEFENDING CHAMPS

The Bulldogs took on a hefty challenge Thursday night, as UMD took on last season's Division II National Champions. The Bulldogs were ready and up to the task.

It was a very wet and windy fall night in Duluth. That didn't stop UMD from starting off strong, with sophomore forward Hannah Caldwell starting the scoring in the eighth minute of the game, putting one past Bridgeport's goalkeeper Claudia Torres on a rebound pass from senior forward Logan Nash and senior forward Nan Glinsek to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 early in the first half. The Purple Knights would find the back of the net just seven minutes later, tying it up at one a side before the first half would end.

17 minutes in the second half, Nash hammered a rebound home off a shot from sophomore forward Mandy Conkel. That goal would give UMD the lead and the Bulldogs didn't look back from there. Less than three minutes later, off a free kick, junior forward Holly Kaboord would pinpoint a shot in the top right of the net and give UMD a two-goal lead. Bridgeport wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring a goal with 12 minutes left, but their effort was not enough to come back.

Sophomore goaltender Sophia Grenz was able to pick up seven saves in the victory, facing nine shots in the match. Senior midfielder Emily Hinz, Nash, Caldwell, Kaboord and freshman forward Lauren Singstock finish the game with two shots each. The Bulldogs finished the game with 12 shots, outshooting Bridgeport 12-9.

UMD continues its' home stand and starts conference play next week, hosting the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles at 5:00 p.m. at Griggs field.

BULLDOGS NOTES:
Holly Kaboord's goal was her first of her collegiate career, as well as her first game winning goal. Nash scores her fifth goal of her career and her first of the 2019 season. Caldwell scores her first of the 2019 campaign and her second overall.
