STRONG FIRST HALF PROPELS BULLDOGS PAST GOLDEN EAGLES

The University of Minnesota Duluth finished off a perfect weekend with a 78-64 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, Minn.

Redshirt-freshman guard Drew Blair got the Bulldogs (11-3 overall; 6-2 NSIC) off to another quick start. One possession after finishing an easy lay-in, Blair turned up the difficulty with a deep three from the right-wing to give UMD an early 10-2 advantage. Just before the midway point of the first half, sophomore guard Mason Steffen hit an outstretched senior forward Alex Illikainen in the lane for another easy layup to put the Bulldogs ahead by nine at 17-8. A couple minutes later, Blair's over the shoulder pass found senior guard Trevor Entwisle alone on the right wing for another Bulldog three-pointer to put the Bulldogs ahead by 10 points at 22-12. The first-half momentum continued to build for the Bulldogs when senior forward Brandon Myer forced a charge on Golden Eagle guard Harrison Cleary.  With just under three minutes remaining, Myer sized up his defender and knocked down UMD's 5th three of the half and on the next Bulldog possession, Blair added two more from the charity stripe to push the Bulldog lead to 18 points.

Blair took no time in adding to his productive night in the second half. On UMD's first possession, Blair sliced his way through the lane for another lay-in. A minute later, Entwisle found Illikainen cutting to the basket for an easy basket to push the Bulldog lead up to 23 points at 42-19. The Golden Eagles (7-7 overall; 3-5 NSIC) answered with an 8-2 run but it would be put to rest when Myer found Entwisle open for his second three-pointer of the game. Crookston picked up the pressure with a full-court press to build a 9-2 run but senior guard Logan Rohrscheib added four straight points on back-to-back possessions and senior forward Yalim Olcay added another layup to keep the Bulldogs in control. With 5:09 remaining, Crookston cut the UMD lead back down to ten points at 66-56 courtesy of a layup from Tyrese Shines. Myer would add two more with a pull up jumper from the free-throw line to push the advantage back to 14 points. Ahead by 11 points, UMD would go the final 2:16 without Myer when he fouled out of the game. A miss communication on an inbounds pass gave the Bulldogs the ball back with a minute-and-a-half to go. Entwisle turned the Crookston mistake into two points with a pair of free throws to give the Bulldogs the final 78-64 score.
