The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team would remain undefeated in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, beating the University of Minnesota-Crookston 68-67. The Bulldogs now sit 11-3 overall, while carrying an 8-0 record in the NSIC. UMC falls to 2-10 overall, going 1-7 in the NSIC.
UMD would shoot 36.8% (25-68) on the afternoon, netting five 3-pointers and 13 free throws. The Bulldogs would grab 38 rebounds. UMC would shoot 39.0 (23-59) on the afternoon while scoring eight 3-pointers and 13 free throws, grabbing 48 rebounds.
After getting off to a hot opening start, the Bulldogs would hold possession for most of the first quarter, and the score would show it after UMD held an 18-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. The Bulldogs would shoot 41.2% (7-17) from the floor and drained two 3-pointers.
The Golden Eagles were determined to get back into the thick of things and would do so by outscoring UMD by 11 points in the second quarter, putting up 26 points while shooting an astonishing 78.6% (11-14) in the second quarter and lead the Bulldogs 35-33 heading into halftime.
UMD would find its stride out of the break, scoring five straight to take the lead at 38-35. The Bulldogs would continue to gain momentum on offense while playing solid defense. Senior forward
Katie Stark would drain two 3-pointers and drop in a 2-pointer to give UMD a 45-38 lead heading into a media timeout. After the teams would battle back and forth for possession, Stark would score two free throws to put the Bulldogs ahead 50-44 with two minutes left in the quarter. UMD would take a 52-49 lead into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore forward
Brooke Olson would score a quick 2-pointer and draw a foul in the process, scoring to make it a three-point play. The Bulldogs would trail by one after junior guard
Ann Simonet would commit a foul. Olson would follow with two made baskets to lead 56-55 with eight minutes remaining. The two sides battled for possession, with Olson drawing a foul and scoring both shots. The Golden Eagles would score a quick two to pull within two before freshman guard
Taytum Rhoades would drop in a layup to put the Bulldogs up 64-60. With UMC pulling within two, two jump balls would take place, and the Golden Eagles would land the second one, leading to a quick two points for a tie at 64 with two minutes. Olson would foul out following the basket. Simonet would score two free throws to put UMD up by two with one-minute left. Sophomore guard
Maesyn Thiesen would commit a foul, leading to two made free throws to tie things up at 66. UMC would take a one-point lead with 46.8 seconds off a foulk by Thiesen. Junior forward
Payton Kahl would score off a free throw, with UMC calling a timeout with 22.6 remaining. With four seconds left, UMD would draw a foul and drain one to win 68-67.
Rhoades would finish with two points and three rebounds. Olson would score 18, grabbing seven rebounds with three assists. Simonet would score seven, grabbing three rebounds. Thiesen would drop seven, grabbing three rebounds. Kahl would score six, with one rebound.
The Bulldogs are back in action next week, traveling to the University of Mary on Jan. 10.
