Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

BULLDOGS OUTLAST REDHAWKS EN ROUTE TO 5-3 VICTORY

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey program has been on a roll to start the season, winning their third straight game in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Pod, and their eighth straight victory dating back to last season.

The Bulldogs took down Miami University, 5-3, and outshot the Redhawks 44-29.

"Good, hard fought win which we know it was going to be. They're a team that plays extremely hard and in your face and you saw that tonight," said head coach Scott Sandelin. "We built up a big enough lead to make it hold up."

It was a loud first period from both sides. Scoring started just 4:07 into the first frame, with senior forward Kobe Roth pounding one home after senior forward Nick Swaney made a pass off of a spin-o-rama to a behind the back pass to junior forward Noah Cates. Cates made a pass across the crease to Roth, who hammered the puck to the back of the net. The Redhawks tied things up just 11 seconds later after a puck popped out to the blue line where Miami defender Derek Daschke threw it on net and forward Monte Graham cashed in on the rebound. The Redhawks would take a 2-1 lead 7:45 into the first. Sophomore forward Quinn Olson would then tie the game 9:59 into the first, catching a pass from junior defenseman Jake Rosenbaum which allowed him a breakaway. Olson made it count as he picked the top left corner.

UMD would pot the next two goals in the second period, with the first coming from sophomore forward Luke Loheit. Loheit ripped a one-timer from Roth on a 2-1 odd man rush just 3:08 into the second. Junior forward Cole Koepke found the back of the net six minutes later on a scrum in front of the net. Miami would cut the lead in half, scoring with 5:16 left in the second. The Bulldogs went into the locker room with a 4-3 lead.

The only goal that would come in the third was on an empty netter off the stick of Roth for his second of the game, sealing the deal with 46 seconds left on the clock after the Redhawks pulled their net minder.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Fanti finished the night with 26 saves, and now carries a 3-0-0 record on the season. Roth finished the night with two goals and an assist. He now has five points on the year, scoring four goals in three games. Koepke, Loheit and Olson all scored their first goals of the season tonight, with Koepke and Olson each adding an assist for two points on the night. Swaney also had two assists, with Cates and Rosenbaum each grabbing one assist.

"Anytime we can come out and score a good amount of goals is definitely good for the offense," said Koepke. "It's just been great for our team. We haven't necessarily struggled to find the back of the net so far this year and hopefully we can just keep getting contributions from all of our lines."

UMD is back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7:35pm for another matchup against Miami University.
