BULLDOGS CLOSE OUT FOUR-GAME ROAD TRIP BY FALLING AT UPPER IOWA

The University of Minnesota Duluth fell to the Upper Iowa University Peacocks on Saturday evening 84-79. This marks the first time that the Bulldogs have lost two straight games all season. UMD is now 16-6 overall on the year while going 11-5 against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents. UIU carries a 14-8 overall record while going 11-5 against NSIC opponents.
 
Minnesota Duluth would shoot 36.5% (23-63) from the floor, grabbing 41 rebounds, three blocks and shooting 76.3% (29-38) from the charity stripe. Upper Iowa would shoot 45.9% (28-61) form the floor, grabbing 33 rebounds, two blocks and 87.5% (21-24) from the charity stripe.
 
The Bulldogs would open the scoring with a quick layup. Senior forward Brandon Myer would drain two free throws. Redshirt freshman guard Drew Blair would drain two free throws to extend UMD's lead. The Bulldogs would open the game with an 8-0 start before UIU would call a timeout in an attempt to slow UMD down. The Peacocks would score their first two points out of the timeout but UMD would respond with two straight baskets to go up by 10 with just over 15 minutes left in the half. UIU would chip away at the Bulldogs lead before the first media timeout, UMD ahead 12-7. The Peacocks would score out of the timeout, Myer responding with a short jumper of his own. UMD would take a timeout with 11:54 left, leading 16-12. The Bulldogs would score two free throws out of the timeout, followed by a layup in tight to take back the eight point lead. The teams would trade baskets with UMD taking a 7-point lead into a media timeout 23-16. After UIU would score two baskets out of the timeout, Blair dropped in a layup but the Peacocks would score one to cover the two points. Senior guard Trevor Entwisle would draw a foul,  scoring his two first two points, giving UMD a 5-point 27-22 lead with 6:28 remaining. UIU would trail by one point heading into the media timeout at 27-26. Blair would draw a foul while scoring, draining the free throw to complete the 3-point play. Upper Iowa would take the lead with 3:45 to play off of a 3-pointer, but senior forward Alex Illikainen would grab it back with a layup shortly after. The Peacocks responds with a layup of their own,  followed by a steal and layup to gain a 3-point lead. UIU would extend their lead with a layup, but sophomore guard Hunter Plamann would put one of his own to respond. The Bulldogs would trail by three, 37-34 going into halftime.
 
UIU would score right away to start the half with a short jumper to gain a 5-point lead. Myer would open scoring for UMD with a layup, but the Peacocks would respond with a layup to negate the points. Myer would draw a foul and bring the Bulldogs to a 2-point defect. Myer would draw another foul and score one but UIU responded with a 3-pointer ad a jumper to take a 6-point lead. UMD would trail heading into the first media timeout of the half 48-40. Freshman guard Jack Middleton would score out of the timeout, but the Peacocks responded with two of their own. Myer would score two free throws after drawing a foul but UIU would respond with a deep 3-pointe, to which Illikainen would throw in a layup to follow. UMD would trail by six heading into a media timeout 58-52. There was no scoring for the first minute and change out of the timeout until Myer drew a foul and scored both free throws that were given to him. UMD would trail by six heading into a media timeout, 60-54. The Bulldogs would come out of the break with a layup to pull within four. UIU would gain the 6-point lead back after drawing a foul and making both free throws. UMD trailed by six heading into the final media timeout 62-56. The Bulldogs scored a quick layup before Myer would draw a foul and make one of two to pull within three, to which the Peacocks responded with a deep three to gain the 6-point lead back. UMD would draw two fouls, scoring all four baskets to pull within two before UIU scored a short jumper to sit four points up and drawing a foul on the shot, scoring the extra point but Blair would drive the lane and pull the Bulldogs back within three. The Peacocks would score a short jumper in response. With a 1:44 remaining, UIU would draw a foul and score two, to which Entwisle would respond with a dep 3-pointer. The Peacocks would shoot a deep 3-pointer but senior guard Logan Rorhscheib would respond with one from beyond the arc. UMD would trail 75-71 and call a timeout with 51 seconds left in the game. The Bulldogs were unable to find momentum to take the game, falling to the Peacocks 84-79.
 
After the game, head coach Justin Wieck said "Tough night for us on the offensive end. 17 turnovers are hard to overcome. This is always a tough road trip. [We're] looking forward to getting back to Romano for four straight games".
 
Myer dropped a double-double, scoring 25 points, going 14-18 from the charity stripe, grabbing 11 rebounds with one block and two steals. Blair would score 16, going 8-8 from the charity stripe, grabbing two rebounds with one assist. Entwisle would score 12 with one rebound. Illikainen would score six with 16 rebounds.
 
Myer now has 1,760 points in his career, along with 771 rebounds, climbing to take the second spot in points (chasing 1,808) and fourth spot in rebounds (chasing 784).
 
The Bulldogs come home to Romano Gym to play host to Augustana University on Feb. 7.
