MYER, UMD CATCHES FIRE AND SLAY DRAGONS FOR SENIOR NIGHT VICTORY

The University of Minnesota Duluth needed a hot start after dropping only their second home game of the season on Friday. That's exactly what they got in a 99-86 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference triumph over Minnesota State University-Moorehead Saturday evening at Romano Gymnasium.

To begin their final regular-season game at Romano Gymnasium, senior guard Trevor Entwisle hit senior forward Brandon Myer in the air for an alley-oop layin, a play the two also connected on in Friday night's matchup with Northern State. On the next possession, senior guard Logan Rohrscheib cashed in on a deep three-pointer from the top of the key. Alex Illikainen continued the hot start by completing a three-point play and then connected on a three-pointer on the next possession. Illikainen would not be done, on the next two Bulldog possessions, he drained two more three-pointers that helped the Bulldogs (19-7 overall, 14-6 NSIC) build an early 19-4 advantage. Redshirt-freshman Drew Blair also got in on the three-point barrage to push the UMD advantage up to 18 points. The Bulldogs opened the game shooting 7-10 (70.0%) from the field, including a 5-8 (62.5%) clip from behind the arc.

MSU-Moorehead (16-10 overall, 12-8 NSIC) responded with a 9-0 run of their own to cut their deficit to nine points at 22-13 with about twelve-and-a-half minutes remaining in the half. Freshman guard Jack Middleton and Myer ended the run with UMD's sixth and seventh made three-point attempts of the half. Ahead by nine points with 5:34 to go, Myer sliced his way through the Dragon defense and was fouled on his way up to the basket. Myer got the layup to drop in and he converted the extra free throw for his 13th point of the game and pushed the lead to 39-27. With 3:36 remaining, Myer picked up a loose ball and raced off for a two-handed slam dunk on the breakaway. Myer added two more points on a pair of free throws after a technical foul was called on MSU-Moorhead head coach Chad Walthall. The sequence pushed the Bulldog lead up to 17 points at 46-29.

It didn't take long for Myer to get going in the second half. He was responsible for the first nine points for UMD in the second half, including a pull-up jumper from just inside the three-point line that put the Bulldogs up by 20 points at 61-41 and gave Myer 30 points for the game. The third-place Dragons in the NSIC North fought back with a 12-0 run capped off with a three-pointer from Bryce Irsfeld which cut the Bulldog lead to six points at 66-60 with 13:17 to play. Blair put the Bulldogs back up by 11 points at 75-64 with a deep three-pointer from the right-wing. Illikainen cashed in on his fourth three-pointer of the game, this one from the top of the key, and Rohrscheib found Entwisle alone in the left corner for another three to put UMD back ahead by 14 points at 85-71. Myer broke his previous career-high of the 34 points, set this season on January 11, 2020, at Minot State, with a three from the top of the key to give the Bulldogs an 88-73 lead with 4:45 remaining. Sophomore guard Mason Steffen found Myer in the lane who made a late adjustment on the catch for an acrobatic layup to put the final dagger in the Dragons. The layup put the Bulldogs up by 19 points at 98-79 with 1:24 left in the game. It also set a career-high of 45 points for Myer and he was two points shy of tying the all-time, single-game record at UMD of 47 points set by Jerry Meyer against the University of Wisconsin-Superior on February 1, 1994.

Notables:
UMD took a 16-point advantage into halftime and shot 17-34 (50.0%) from the field, 11-22 (50.0%) on three-pointers, and 9-12 (75.0%) from the charity stripe ... The Bulldogs picked up nine second-chance points in the opening 20 minutes, compared to just two from MSU-Moorehead ... UMD created 12 points off of eight Dragon turnovers and edged MSU-Moorehead 17-15 on the glass in the first period.

Three Bulldogs landed in double figures in points Saturday evening: Myer (45 points, 13-25 FG) who also picked up his 11th double-double of the season with 15 rebounds, Illikainen (21 points, 8-12 FG), and Rohrscheib (13 points, 4-7 FG) ... The 17 made three-pointers by the Bulldogs were three shy of a program record of 20 set on December 3, 2004, against Northland College.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs, who will finish the regular season with a 12-2 record at home, will hit the road for their final two regular-season NSIC contests beginning next Friday (Feb. 21) when they take on the University of Minnesota-Crookston. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Crookston, MN.
