BULLDOGS STAY UNDEFEATED IN ROMANO, SENIORS SHINE IN CONFERENCE WINNING SENIOR DAY AGAINST DRAGONS

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team topped the Minnesota State University Dragons on Saturday afternoon 70-47, winning the Northern Division of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as well as the NSIC Conference regular season title for the first time since the 2002-03' season. The Bulldogs went undefeated at Romano Gymnasium this season, the first time since the 1999-00' season. UMD is now 21-5 on the season going 18-2 in the NSIC, while MSUM is 16-11 on the year and 11-9 in the NSIC. 

The Bulldogs shot 42.6% (26-61) from the floor, hitting 50.0% (11-22) of shots beyond the arc and grabbed 43 rebounds on the night. The Dragons shot 31.7% (20-63) from the floor, hitting 15.8% (3-19) from beyond the arc while grabbing 36 rebounds.

After winning the tipoff, MSUM was able to open scoring with a deep 3-pointer. The two teams would go back and forth on baskets heading into the first media timeout of the game with the Dragons leading 9-7 with 4:30 remaining. Senior forward Katie Stark nailed a shot from beyond the arc to give the Bulldogs a one-point lead, which was followed by a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Maesyn Thiesen to extend UMD's lead by four. Stark hit a short jumper leading into an MSUM timeout with 2:20 remaining. Heading into the second quarter, the Bulldogs would hold a 19-11 lead. The Dragons would open scoring with one made free throw followed by a short jumper. Heading into a media timeout, the Bulldogs would hold a 27-14 lead. The Dragons dropped a quick layup out of the break, but Stark would answer with a basket from deep range to gain a 14-point lead. UMD found stride heading into half, taking a 17-point 40-23 lead into the half.

MSUM would score first with a layup in tight with junior guard Ann Simonet following by draining her first points of the game with a 3-pointer. The teams would battle with the Dragons cutting the lead down to nine with 4:41 remaining, Bulldogs leading 45-36. MSUM scored out of the break with a quick two, but UMD would respond with one of their own. Scoring would go quiet for a couple minutes before Thiesen would drain a 3-pointer on a pass from junior forward Payton Kahl. The Bulldogs took a 50-38 lead into the fourth quarter where junior forward Sarah Grow scored an in tight jumper. Kahl would nail a deep jumper and followed that up with a huge block on the other end. UMD found a roll to start the quarter, going on a 10-2 in the first four minutes. Heading into a media timeout, the Bulldogs would lead 60-42. Senior guard Taylor Schneider would hit a quick two to up the Bulldogs lead to 19 before Stark hit a deep shot beyond the arc. Schneider would nail two free throws to follow. Freshman guard Kaylee Nelson hit a deep 3-pointer for her first points of the contest. UMD would finish out the night topping the Dragons by a score of 70-47.

Sophomore forward Brooke Olson finished the evening with 13 points, grabbing four rebounds and two assists. Stark finished with 11 points, grabbing three rebounds with two blocks, a steal and two assists. Schneider finished with 11 points as well, grabbing four rebounds and three assists. Grow finished with 10 points, grabbing one rebound. Thiesen finished with eight points, three steals, six assists, one block and a game high 11 rebounds.

The Bulldogs finish out the regular season next weekend, taking on the University of Minnesota Crookston (Feb. 21) and Bemidji State University (Feb. 22).
