MYER ECLIPSES 2,000 POINTS, UMD ESCAPES CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

Duluth, MN - The #2 North Division seed University of Minnesota Duluth survived a double-overtime thriller over the #7 South Division seed Concordia-St. Paul 92-87 in the opening round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament Wednesday night at Romano Gymnasium.

After surrendering an early 5-0 deficit, senior guard Logan Rohrscheib drained a three-pointer to get the Bulldogs (21-8 overall) on the board. Rohrscheib also gave UMD their first lead of the game four minutes later with a layup. The lay in was part of a 13-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 20-10 advantage. With just over a minute-and-a-half to go, redshirt-freshman guard Drew Blair drove to the middle of the lane and drained a left-handed floater to give UMD a 36-31 advantage. Now with just under 30 seconds to play, senior forward and UMD's all-time leading scorer Brandon Myer blocked a three-point attempt and turned it into a two-handed slam dunk on the other end of the floor to keep a five-point lead into halftime at 40-35. The Bulldogs went into halftime shooting 15-of-31 (48.4%) from the field and converted four of their thirteen attempts (30.8%) from beyond the arc while cashing in on six of their seven (85.7%) tries from the charity stripe.

Rohrscheib opened the scoring again for the Bulldogs in the second half with an eight-foot jumper off of a dish from senior guard Trevor Entwisle. But the Golden Bears (9-18 overall) used a 9-2 run to open the period to take a 44-42 advantage which was capped of by a four-point play from Carlos Barela. It was their first lead since the 14:01 mark of the first half. Myer's pull-up three from the right-wing retook a three-point advantage for UMD with 15:20 to play. Now trailing by one, sophomore guard Hunter Plamann cashed in a three-point attempt to grab the lead back for the Bulldogs. After a pair of made free throws from Myer, Plamann found senior forward Alex Illikain posted up under the basket. Illikainen then spun around his defender and finished with a reverse layup. Freshman guard Jack Middleton broke away for a lay  in to open an eight-point lead for the Bulldogs at 60-52 with 10:55 left in the game. A quick 7-0 run from the Golden Bears brought them back to within one before Myer added his third and fourth made free throws on the night. With under three-and-a-half minutes remaining, Entwisle connected on a fade-a-way jumper from inside the lane to give the Bulldogs a 70-65 advantage. A quick two from C-SP was followed by a deep three-pointer from Perion Little to erase the five-point UMD lead. With 33.9 seconds remaining and down by one after a Golden Bear layup, Myer connected on the back end of a pair of free-throw attempts to tie the game up at 73. Concordia-St. Paul had a chance to win the game but the Bulldog defense forced a shot clock violation to give UMD 3.9 seconds to advance the ball up the court. After a timeout, Myer raced down the court for a buzzer-beater lay in but Little stripped Myer of the ball on his way up to the basket to force overtime.

In the extra period of play, Myer won the opening jump and Blair found Illikainen underneath the basket for an easy layup. On the next possession, Blair cashed in on a fade-a-way jumper to give the Bulldogs an early four-point lead. Iliikainen and Blair nearly connected on a nifty give and go but Blair was fouled on the layup attempt. Blair connected on both free throws. Concordia and UMD would go on trade charging fouls before Little connected on a contested three-point shot from the right corner to cut UMD's lead to two points at 79-77. Two consecutive threes from Max Keefe gave the Golden Bears an 83-81 lead with 1:30 to play. With 35.9 seconds left, Rohrscheib was fouled attempting a put-back lay in. Rohrscheib connected on both free throws to the game at 83. After the officials reviewed a tipped rebound that went out of bounds, possession was awarded to C-SP with 1.5 seconds left. A deep three-point try from the right-wing went off of the back of the rim and forced double overtime.

After C-SP missed two free throws to open double overtime, Myer connected on two free throws of his own to break the deadlock. Myer eclipsed 2,000 career points on the pair of free throws and became the first Bulldog to reach the mark. A minute later, Entwisle picked the Golden Bear's pocket and took the steal back for an easy lay-in. Myer added two-more free throws after another Golden Bear turnover to take an 89-85 lead. With under a minute remaining, C-SP turnover the ball over once more and Blair cashed in on two more free throws to secure head coach Justin Wieck's first playoff win.
