DULUTH, MN -- The University of Minnesota Duluth shot 57% from the field an equally impressive 52% from beyond the arc to take down Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Wayne State College 91-70 Saturday evening at Romano Gymnasium.
On UMD's first possession of the game, redshirt-freshman guard Drew Blair got the Bulldogs (18-6 overall, 13-5 NSIC) on the board with a three-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock expired. Blair's three sparked a 12-2 run to begin the game where UMD connected on five of their first seven field goals. A couple of minutes later, senior guard Trevor Entwisle forced a charge and senior forward Brandon Myer cashed in on the turnover with a lay-in and a free throw off of an and-one opportunity. Freshman guard Jack Middleton's fade-a-way putback extended the UMD lead to 17 points at 37-20 with over eigh-and-half minutes to go in the opening half. Blair, who went 5-5 on three-pointers Friday night, cashed in on his first four attempts beyond the arc Saturday, including his fourth from NBA-range to push the Bulldog lead up to 18 points at 43-25. Senior forward Alex Illikainen added a two-hand slam dunk and a free throw on the and-one opportunity and senior guard Logan Rohrscheib's three-pointer on the next possession ballooned the lead to 24 points at 49-25 with 4:39 left to play in the first half.
Entwisle nailed UMD's 11th three-pointer of the game, this one from the right-wing, to open the scoring for the Bulldogs in the second half. After Wayne State cut the lead back down to under 20 points, Rohrscheib, who sits alone in fourth place at UMD in made three-pointers, connected on a triple and a couple of free throws from Myer put UMD back ahead by 21 points at 80-59 with under six-and-a-half minutes to go. With just under 30 seconds remaining, senior guard Cody Tomlinson finished the game just as Blair started it with a deep three from the top of the key as the shot clock expired.
Notables: In the 54-point first-half display, the shot 21-33 (63.6%) and went 10-17 (58.8%) on three-point attempts … UMD held the Wildcats to 11-29 (37.9%) from the field and 2-10 (20.0%) from beyond the arc …
Four Bulldogs landed in double figures in Saturday's victory: Myer (21 points, 8-15 FG), Blair (16 points, 5-7 FG), Illikainen (15 points, 7-10 FG), and Rohrscheib (15 points, 6-9 FG).
