It took a third-set tie breaker in the final match of the afternoon to determine a winner in the University of Minnesota Duluth's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match with Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Sunday morning.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, their bid to knock the Dragons from the ranks of the 2020 unbeatens came up short in a 4-3 setback in Bismarck, N.D.
UMD, which opened the weekend by falling to the University of Mary, 5-2, one day earlier, is now 6-4 overall and an even 4-4 in NSIC play.
Against the Dragons, senior
Megan Anderson and junior
Isabel Thiner prevailed at No. 2 doubles (6-2) to improve to 7-3 on the year. MSU-Moorhead (9-0 overall, 8-0 NSIC) came out on top at No. 3 doubles and needed a tie breaker to take down junior
Natalie Cahill and
Sophie Lynch to win at No. 1 doubles.
Trailing 1-0 after doubles play, the Bulldogs got singles wins from Cahill at No. 3, Thiner at No. 6 and rookie
Mallory Lithun at No. 5 while the Dragons won at No. 1 and No. 2. They clinched the victory at No. 4 singles, with Alexis Konecne defeating UMD freshman
Emily Rahrik in a three-set tiebreaker.
Anderson and Thiner were victorious in No. 2 doubles as well in the setback to Mary while Cahill (No. 3) and Lithun (No. 5) produced straight set singles wins.
The Bulldogs won't return to the court until March 21 when they'll face NSIC rival St. Cloud State University in Sartell, Minn.Â
