CURT GILES NAMED TO WCHA 1970S ALL DECADE TEAM

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association annouced its 1970s All-Decade team this morning, Jan. 19.

Of the six named to the team, University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey alumni defenseman Curt Giles was among them.

Giles played at UMD from 1975-79. He was a two time All-American (1977-78, 78-79) as well as a two time All-WCHA (1977-78, 78-79) defenseman while playing as a Bulldog. He put up 171 points, with 36 career goals and 135 assists in 143 games. He ranks 20th all time on the WCHA's assists charts and seventh all time in points among blueliners in the WCHA.

After his college career, Giles played 14 seasons in the National Hockey League for the Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers and the St. Louis Blues. He was the North Stars team MVP three times and amassed 242 points with 43 goals and 199 assists in 895 games. He also played for Canada in the 1982 IIHF World Championship and the 1992 Winter Olympics.

Following his career, Giles was named to the WCHA Top 50 Players in 50 Years list in 2002 as well as the Hockey News All-Time WCHA First Team in 1997.
He also had his Jersey Number retired in 2017 by the Bulldogs and was named into the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
