Following a three week break, the University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team battled through first half rust before making a late fourth quarter comeback for a 61-55 win over Northern State.
UMD had a cold start on the evening, shooting just 5-13 (38.5%) from the field while going 0-3 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Wolves shot 7-11 (63.6%) allowing them at one point to take a nine-point lead in the first quarter, before ending the quarter up seven. The second quarter didn't go any better for UMD as Northern State carried a 32-25 lead into the halftime break.Â
Coming out of halftime, the Bulldogs would start to claw their way back with freshman guard/forward Ella Gilbertson coming off the bench and keeping UMD in the game. After three quarters of play, the Bulldogs had cut the Wolves lead to just four points, the score being 42-38. In the fourth quarter, UMD would find its rhythm. The Bulldogs shot 4-5 (80%) from beyond the arc. Junior forward Brooke Olson would hit a three pointer with just 3:44 left in the game to tie things up at 55-55. Points from sophomore Taytum Rhoades, senior Sarah Grow and junior Maesyn Thiesen would seal the deal for UMD. Northern State would lead the game for 31:01 compared to the Bulldogs' 6:01.Â
The Bulldogs would end up shooting 22-53 (41.5%) from the field and 7-18 (38.9%) from beyond the arc. UMD was resilient in the paint, potting 22 compared to Northern States 18 from in close. Brooke Olson lead UMD with 18 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. Nine of her 18 points would come in the fourth quarter. Olson also finished with five rebounds and one assist. Ella Gilbertson came off the bench for UMD, scoring 16 of the 20 bench points UMD would score. Gilbertson would also finish with two rebounds and one assist on the night. Sarah Grow finished with eight points, led UMD with six rebounds and also contributed one assist. Ann Simonet led all UMD players with seven assists. Simonet also added five points and two steals.Â
UMD and Northern State will meet again tomorrow afternoon inside Romano Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.Â
