The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team will spend their second weekend in a row on the road, heading to Concordia-St. Paul on Friday before closing out the weekend in Mankato on Sunday for a matchup against Minnesota State.
Â
Coming off a dominant team win at University of Minnesota Crookston last week, the Bulldogs are riding momentum into their game against the Golden Bears, who are 6-4-1 overall this season and 5-2-1 in the conference--good for fifth. CSP is riding a three-game win streak into the game and also posted a 4-0 win this past Sunday, beating the visiting Upper Iowa Peacocks. CSP will test the UMD defense -- the Golden Bears are currently the league leaders in goals scored with 26, an average rate of 2.6 goals per game.
Â
UMD is 17-2-3 against CSP since 1999, but the matchup has gotten closer in recent years. Both losses and all three ties have come in the last five years. In the last meeting between the two programs in 2019, it was the Golden Bears who came away with the 1-0 victory.
The Bulldogs will face another high-scoring team when they head to Minnesota State on Sunday. The Mavericks are currently second in the conference in goals scored with 22 (an average of 2.200 goals per game) and sit just behind CSP. The team is 8-2-1 overall this season and currently sits fourth in the conference with a record of 6-1-1.
The matchup with the Mavericks has historically been difficult for the Bulldogs -- the two programs have a 22-8-4 record since 1995. The two teams last met in 2019, when Minnesota State came away with a 2-1 win in double overtime.
The Mavericks' Jenny Vetter is currently second in the conference in goals scored with nine in 10 games. This also puts her second in the conference on points, with 19 -- an average of 1.9 points per game.
UMD's offense was finally able to break through in their most recent game against Crookston, putting up four goals and earning a shutout. All four goals -- scored by Victoria Thorson, Mandy Conkel, Lauren Hansen, and Rachel Boelke -- were first career goals. Emilia McGiffert leads the team in goals scored with two so far this season, while Lauren Singstock leads the team in points with five.
Kickoff against the Golden Bears will be at 7:00pm on Friday evening in St. Paul.
