The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to two games Sunday after double overtime couldn't settle a 1-1 tie for the Bulldogs against Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. WIth the tie, UMD picks up its fourth Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference point on the weekend -- a season-high for UMD.
The Bulldogs, who are 3-2-3 over their last seven games -- found scoring from what's becoming a usual suspect at 32:21 of the first half. Freshman forward Anna Tobias tracked down a ball served into the box by Rachel Boelke, and a miscommunication between the NSU goaltender and a defender, with plenty of pressure from Tobias, led to Tobias tapping in the ball for her fourth goal of the season and second in as many games.
UMD's 1-0 lead lasted just over five minutes, and the Wolves capitalized on a dropping Bulldog defensive line on a blistering shot from Mia Zagorski to knot the game up 1-1 at 37:27.
The endline to endline full field match continued into the second half, with UMD pushing at several points and forcing a 4-to-2 advantage on corner kicks, as well as shots (4-3). But after another 45 minutes and 90 total minutes in the books, overtime loomed for the Bulldogs and Wolves.
Extra time provided no extra scoring, with both sides putting up two shots on goal in the first overtime and NSU attempting a single shot on net in the second. The result was a point for each side in NSIC play.
Sophomore goaltender Jenny Norris had nine saves in the contest, while her counterpart in the Wolves net, Alexus Townsend had six. NSU outshot UMD 10-7 on goal overall in the game, and are now 6-4-4 in conference play.
The Bulldogs (3-11-3 NSIC) will wrap up the 2021 season this upcoming Friday at St. Cloud State University. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
