The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team dictated play for most of Friday night's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference showdown with St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., but the Huskies scored against the grain in the second overtime to beat the Bulldogs 2-1.
UMD, playing in its fourth overtime contest of the season and third in the past five games, outshot SCSU in the game 16-2 and a blistering 12-4 in the second half.
The game certainly didn't start in the Bulldogs favor, with the Huskies Claire Shea beating Bulldog goalkeeper Sophia Grenz from the left side at 13:03 to take the game's first lead. UMD answered midway through the same half on Jackie Jares' third goal of the year. Anna Tobias corralled a ball wide left and found Julia Osborne in the middle of the field. Osborne played the ball on for Jares, and Jares' shot beat SCSU netminder Evie Kohn low and to her right to knot the game at 1-1 at thee 29:31 mark.
The Bulldogs pressed in the second half, shelling the Huskies 12-4, and owning a 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. UMD would not find the net again, despite out possessing the Huskies heavily in the second half and first overtime.
St. Cloud finally broke through at 102:16 on Shea's second goal of the game, this time from the opposite side of the pitch. The goal sealed the Huskies seventh win of the season and a 7-5-3 record in NSIC play.
Grenz finished the game with seven saves, and a total of 96 on the season. Grenz, who entered the game with a 6.36 saves per game average finishes the year with the fifth most saves by a UMD goaltender in program history.
The Bulldogs end the season 3-9-3 in NSIC play and 3-12-3 overall. UMD was unbeaten in three of its last five games to close out the 2021 season.
